Ease of Use and Installation [Posted on 2008-05-08] Gateway GT5654 Desktop PC
After reviewing several computers on various websites and in various stores, I eagerly went for this Gateway. I absolutely love it!!! Even if you are not technically "wise", this one is great. No problem setting up, using, adding software or new printer. This is an excellent buy product. If I had to do it again, I would order this product and from Amazon. It was delivered before the scheduled delivery date and that was OK by me. Would recommended time and time again.
Avoid It [Posted on 2008-05-22] I've had two HP computers in the past, and neither one caused much of a problem, ever... since 1996. The Gateway has been a major pain since day one: programs won't load, programs "hang" or don't respond, webpages freeze, Vista crashes, etc. I realize that the Vista operating system may be part of the problem, but the built-in CD/DVD drive never has worked very well and the system acts as if there isn't enough power to get it going -- kind of like going back to dial-up after using high-speed internet connections.
The Gateway tech people also seem to be in "not responding" mode: Their solution for every problem is "wipe the hard drive" rather than find out what's actually wrong. I did wipe the drive once, but the problems resurfaced almost immediately.
Even with what appears to be considerable RAM, it just doesn't seem to be enough to power this computer if you want to run two programs at once, or add any large software programs of your own. I'm guessing the computer probably works fine if you don't add any extra software. Gateway has really taken all the fun out of computing, and I will avoid Gateway like the plague in future.
