Fair value for money [Posted on 2008-01-01] I wanted a laptop for open source products, which is not a smooth task on the average. HP is among the few top brands that build PCs (Desktops / laptops) with that in mind. Originally, I would have gone for 6910p, yet Amazon sell them all with ATI cards on board, which is non-friendly with Linux, so I went for this one. It worked with Linux (Fedora 8) out of the box, couldn't work with PC-BSD (yet) due to some graphics engine configuration.
The build quality is good for this price and spec., yet the mouse pad is a notable weakness, it is so sensitive that using it on the road is annoying. Touching the pad when trying to move the mouse would easily give a click effect more than half the times, unless you focus on the pressure of your fingers, quite unnecessary distraction. The pad keys are made of cheap flexible rubber. The rest of the laptop is good, screen is sturdy, low noise fan, almost no heating. The placement of USBs, power inlet are all on the side, which is weird (and annoying if you are right-handed like me, since all cables would run across your desk when not on the road). Keyboard size and feel are excellent, the mono speaker is OK if you are scientific oriented like me, but external speakers are a must if you want to do any kind of multimedia.
No recovery disks included, but you can create your own set of media using the supplied HP recovery utility, yet for some reason you can only create one set. Another shortcoming here, recovery media is one image, you can't separate the operating system from the rest of the software, i.e.; no 'fix installed windows' capabilities.
My set came with Vista for business, the upgrade to 2MB memory is a necessity, unless you are patient (and can accept "running low in memory" messages every now and then). I won't go into commenting Vista here as there are enough reviews elsewhere.
