Customer Reviews:

If noise is no problem, here's your color printer! [Posted on 2006-07-05]
Purchased to be a general printer this one works well. Fast, good color, and easy to install. when printing, you do hear lots of clicks, and other loud noises.

Beware if you're not running Windows or Mac OSX 10.1+ [Posted on 2007-04-08]
Amazon's not-so-complete product description fails to mention that this printer does NOT support PCL6, PCL5e or PostScript (all public-domain printer languages for which drivers are commonly available for almost any Operating System -- including Linux), but rather HP's new (and proprietary) "HP JetReady 4.2" Page Definition Language.

The bottom line is that while this printer is likely just fine for users of Windows (98, Me, XP, Server 2003) or Mac OSX 10.1 or higher, users of other operating systems (Linux, for instance) are out of luck.

HP recommends that users requiring a full-featured printer (which DOES support all of the traditional printer languages) opt for the Color LaserJet 3800 series -- which is around $300 additional.

Great office printer - works great under Linux [Posted on 2007-12-24]
After searching a number of reviews from users, magazines, and other sources I finally decided to replace my 12 year old LaserJet 5, and two color inkjet printers with the HP 3600dn. I actually ordered a refurbished one. The hardest part about setting up this printer was lifting it out of the box. At over 60 pounds, it is not something you are going to just move around on a whim.

This printer works fine under Linux. I connected it to the LAN using the ethernet cable and loaded the HPIJS package on my system for the printer driver (available from your favorite distribution source), told CUPS (v1.3.4) to find new printers, and it worked.

Note that this product page shows the printer sitting on top of the optional 500 page third paper tray in some of the pictures. The third tray is an add on that has to be purchased separately.

Print quality is great, just remember that this is not a photo printer. It does a good job with pictures, but it is not meant to compete against the super high resolution printers that can print on photopaper. The built in duplexer works well and saves a lot of trouble when you want to print a large double sided document. This is not a quiet printer, it makes a fair amount of noise while it is working. It sounds a lot like a large copy machine. This is no problem for most office environments, but it might be suprising if you are used to smaller inkjet printers.

The tipping point in choosing this machine over some of the much cheaper models available was the overall cost of ownership. Over the long term this printer will cost less per page for both color and black&white printing than many of the less expensive printers out there. Check out the figures on Tom's Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/02/02/color_laser_printers_2/page9.html
The question really comes down to your expected print volume.

Great Printer for a busy office [Posted on 2008-06-09]
This a a really great printer for our office.
It is a little load when it is printing but the quality over shadows the noise.
Wireless connection to the printer wa pretty easy. We have 4 offices that print to it with out any problem.
It holds a good amount of paper and the duplexor has been great to use as well.
Color pages are great as long as you are not trying to print photos on photo paper. It doesn't do so great in that department.
Fast and reliable is what we were looking for and that is what we got.

HP Color Laserjet 3600DN [Posted on 2008-08-15]
This HP is networked and has duplex (double sided printing), both were absolutely necessary to us. It has the usual downfalls of HP software, when set up to do a custom job it won't accommodate it as stated. This has been a problem with other HPs we have had. I have to use other software to get it to print to its true potential. Very frustrating. But having gone thru this before it was expected. Other than that it is a great printer. The color is very good, I have not attempted printing a photo as I have a dye sublimation printer, but the color used in other printing is very good. Paper does matter, good finish produces crisp, clean color where poor cheep paper produces dull , off color.
