Good printer - great price. [Posted on 2007-08-30] I found this printer to be a great deal. I've been looking for a new inkjet to replace my older HP Deskjet 845C, and I found this one. I produce video, and I had always thought that printing my DVDs would be out of my customers, and therefore my price range. Well, upon seeing this model at a local computer store, I immediately was hooked. It's a good photo printer, and the few documents and pictures I've printed have looked good. The CD/DVD tray is the big deal for me. I personally made a template in Photoshop by measuring a DVD to figure out where to place my guides, though I'm sure some others have listed sizes in their reviews. I design my "labels" in Photoshop, and then export them as a JPEG file, which I then import as the "background image" into HP's Create software. It's really simple when you get right down to it, and once you have the HP software set up for the proper settings, it'll stay that way, so all you have to do is open it, drag in the "label" image that you created in Photoshop or any other graphics software, and hit Print. It's as easy as that. I had a few problems with scratching, like some other people did, but I figured out the problem. The tray that holds the discs is very easy to get dusty, and if you spin the disc while it's in the tray, it will scratch. Luckily, no spinning is required, and so long as you're careful, you shouldn't have any problems.
So, I really liked it, and certainly, it's fine printer, and to get CD and DVD printing at this low of a pricepoint is incredible.
No Vista CD/DVD label printing! [Posted on 2007-10-18] What a waste of money. Returned. Bought it as it has a special DVD label tray right? Guess what, software Photosmart Essentials on the Vista install CD does not give you that option. Only Photosmart Premium which comes on XP Install CD allows you to create and print labels to the special tray. Contacted HP support to no avail. They said the premium version of software is not Vista compatable. I then read fine print on HP website for the printer and it says not all printing features are available under Vista operating system. Great, cost me $40 in shipping both ways to learn that.
Oh yea, I pulled out a laptop using XP, loaded the drivers and software, and tried to print a CD. Kept getting red light errors and tray would not suck in and print and finally I gave up and said this is a piece of junk and I got a cheap printer which is exactly all it is. Sent it back, took the $40 shipping loss and moved on. Just warning you all with Vista machines, don't buy it to print Cd DVD labels.
HP D5160 Printer [Posted on 2007-11-01] Dollar for dollar this printer is awfully hard to beat....
Color is perfect. Speed of printing is exceptional. I have nothing adverse to say regarding this printer....
HP9180 is a Great Printer [Posted on 2007-11-22] When this printer arrived from Amazon, I unpacked it, set it up, ran the HP installation software and was up and running in about 20 minutes. The printer worked flawlessly from the git go and has been utterly dependable ever since. A fantastic piece of gear that produces stunning color and B&W prints. I do a lot of graphics work in Adobe CS3, and the B9180 prints beautifully directly from Photoshop. Again, I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate this hassle-free and wonderful printer. If you are serious about the quality of your color and B&W prints, you will never regret having this printer.
WOW! [Posted on 2008-07-02] Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R11NTO11TKFWUB I bought this because I wanted to be able to print on CDs and DVDs. All i can say is WOW! The cd/dvd print is super fast and takes under a minute even with complicated pictures. I must mention though that i did not buy mine on Amazon. i got it on Ebay for $48 including shipping. :D
At first, i was really unhappy because the print job was ugly and blurry. Guess what? IT WAS OPERATOR ERROR! I was using images that were TOO SMALL so when they got blown up to fit on the CD face they got all blurry.
NOTE: If you're using google images, DON'T use the picture as you get it in the search as those are shrunk to thumbnail. Take the trouble of 4-5 additional seconds to click on the picture and then click on the original image size and BAM! beautiful CDS.
I made a copy of Burn Notice Season 1 and got an image from google to print on it and the result was hard to tell it was not a retail DVD copy except for my horrible design skills :) . Use the right image size and this think is an unbeatable deal. Also, it does not use ink excessively like other printers. I've printed about 40-50 dvd/cds and i'm still half full. Oh, and it makes nice paper printing too. I haven't tried the photo printing yet though. Mostly shipping lables and business documents.
The software is really easy to use and does a really good job if you're not trying to do professional editing. The only complaint I have is that you can't get rid of the text box on the cd/dvd but it's okay.
I wanted to put in a video/picks of some of the dvds i did before and after i figured out about image size for those complaining about bad prints but i can't figure out how.
P.S.: THE CONVERTER I USED FOR THE VIDEO FROM MY CELL PHONE TO AVI FORMAT REALLY SUCKED. PLEASE FORGIVE ME.
