HP 5550 - a very fragile machine [Posted on 2007-02-28]
I am afraid I have to agree with the negative reviews concerning the HP 5550. I bought one about 6 weeks ago and it worked fine for the first month. After putting in a refurbished cartridge recently, it printed 1 page and then stopped halfway through the second page, telling me to "check the line". The "line" was working fine, but there was no real explanation given, either on-line or in the user manual, for it to stop right in the middle of printing the document. Also, the machine is very fragile to handle. Lifting up the lid to check on or replace an ink cartridge makes a sound that makes one think the machine has been broken beyond repair, and I am afraid that that is what has happened to this one.
Best Printer I Will Ever Own [Posted on 2007-04-28]
I've owned this printer for almost five years now and it is the greatest printer I have ever worked with. I used it all throughout college, printing thousands pages worth of papers and handouts. I always printed in Fast Draft mode so it would use little ink, print very, very fast, but the text was a little lighter. However, most of the things I printed weren't going to be handed in so I didn't care. Printing in Fast Draft mode will easily let you print about 1500 to 2000 pages of text. And that's at only $20 a cartridge which is incredible. I don't print photos myself but my wife uses the printer now to print pictures and she's amateur photographer and it works great for her.
I would highly recommend this printer to anyone who's main focus is text with the occasional photo. It uses very little ink and the black ink is quite cheap when you do need to buy it. I used to sell printers at an office supply store and I would always recommend this printer. The HP 5550 is awesome.

I've had this printer for a little over 6 years now and it's been the best I've ever worked with for home & office use. I've used it for printing all of my wedding invitations, rvsp's, maps, and programs. That's well over 800 sheets (and I did most of it in about a week). And that was just recently. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this product. The only con is that it doesn't have built-in ethernet ports for networking. It's still as fast as it was the day I bought it... All-in-all, it's a great printer to have for college students and home use.

This machine jams paper routinely. When it does work, it does a decent job of printing while quickly using up its expensive cartridges. I am sorry I purchased it, and am looking for a replacement.

I bought this printer a little over 5 years ago and it's still my home PC workhorse. It's not the fastest or most efficient printer out there in terms of ink use, and yes it looks like a Klingon battle cruiser, but it prints when I need it to and the quality is just fine for what I need.
I can count the number of times where it has jammed on one hand and still have fingers left over and that's after countless reams of paper have gone through it. Every once in a while I look at new printers and just can't justify getting anything else when this one is still chugging along, so I still have it.
There are certainly better and more attractive deals out there now, but if you have a chance to pick one of these up for short money, you won't be disappointed with it.
