Customer Reviews:

Typical Failure [Posted on 2007-01-14]
I will keep this short. I experienced the same failure, the ink cartridge sticks on the right side of travel and strips the small plastic gears. I have no problem with the plastic gears as all printers and electronics have them. What really pissed me off was the response from HP; they are aware of this problem and should issue a call back as so many of these have failed in the same manner. I have had considerable luck with other HP products so I will probably continue to use their products.

HP 3820 Service Station Gear Problem [Posted on 2007-04-02]
HP has had big problems with the HP3820. The Service Station Gears within the machine were not designed to withhold stress on the printer carriage. When the carriage is pushed - these gears easily break. HP does not sell these gears. I did find them on eBay. A search of "HP 3820 Service Station Gears" should get you there. Most of the problems described point towards these gears. Hope this helps.

Worst electronic device I have ever purchased [Posted on 2007-05-30]
I have never purchased an electronic device as awful as the HP 3820. I had a Canon that lasted for more than 5 years. Live and learn I guess.

pretty average [Posted on 2007-07-21]
I've had the 3820 for about 1 1/2 yrs. Luckily I haven't had the problem most have had, but I'm not a heavy printer. I've replace the ink cartridges once (tried a refill kit once but threw it away). My main complaint are the cartridge prices. The print quality is average on plain HR paper. The printer is pretty noisy. One other thing is that HP stated on the support page that no new Vista driver will be made for the 3820. You have to either use the default Windows driver or some 970cs printer driver, neither with the same features or interface as the real driver. It's great for the kids to use and for documents, etc. I would not get it for photos or High res. I just bought a new Canon pixma mp180. it's much quieter and is also copier/scanner with lcd display and memory card reader /direct camera connection for $20 less than the 3820 costs. Keeping the 3820 for black and white and documents and such. I've never been a big HP fan and this was the first product I've owned. Probably not have another, sorry.

Ok printer, mechanical problems though.  [Posted on 2007-10-09]
I have been using this printer long enough to get through about 2 new cartridge purchaes. The quality of the prints is fine, on good paper you get a really nice picture out of it. The problem is like others on the site, the cartridge holder slid all the way to the right and is now jammed. With a little bit of wiggling it came free, but it now gives constant carriage errors. And after multiple conversations with HP the only thing they have to offer is to bring it in for repair (about 80$) or buy a new printer..... THANKS HP!!!
