Customer Reviews:

Good inexpensive option [Posted on 2007-02-24]
I bought this printer back in late 2005 and it's still working great. It's very light in comparison to a lot of other printers I've had and does a great job printing. I have to agree with some of the other comments in that it does use up ink rather quickly. The low-ink warning also comes up way before it needs to. the "low-ink" warning was up for about 6 months before i actually needed to replace the ink. HP should have a better meter but really they just want you to spend more money. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and will continue using this printer until I go to college this fall (I plan on buying an all-in-one printer by HP at that time)

Don't listen to ignorant people [Posted on 2007-04-30]
I bought this printer two years ago, and i Have printed Hundreds of pages with it. SomeTimes I download E-books and I don't like to read them on the PC,so I Print Them (usually 250 pages per book), and I never had any problem of running out of ink, because if you put the printer settings in "fast draft ", the quality is Excellent and It takes about 5 sec per page.
Don't listen to people like the reviewer Zachary Walker that says that this printer(all 3940 printers) has this or that problem,just because HIS 3940 has that problem due to defect or because his Pc is full of Spyware, or because he doesn't know how to use a printer.
Excellent Printer; printed almost 350 pages in a row(fast draft) without using the whole cartridge.I have already printed 5 Books(~1300 Pags and many more word documents) and I only Bought 2 cartridges besides the ones that comes with the printer.

Piece of junk [Posted on 2007-09-10]
This thing has so many paper feed problems it's not even funny. When you try to print something it'll make a grinding noise and then just sit there with a blinking light, frustrating me to no end. Avoid buying this printer if you can!

Very Poor - Do Not Buy [Posted on 2007-09-14]
Printer purchased one year ago. In addition to paper jams, the black ink cartridge has not lasted more than 2 months, less than 100 pages. Print quality is horrible. Lines are skipped and some lines appear to be in bold and others not. Usually this means it is time to change the black ink cartridge. It is hard to believe that printing on the most economical setting still requires 6 ink cartridges per year. My experience with this printer has affected my opinion of HP printers. I do not expect to ever buy this brand again.

Don't be drawn in by the low initial cost [Posted on 2008-09-22]
I purchased this printer about a year ago because it was so inexpensive and I had light printing needs: a few homework assignments, driving maps, a photo now and then. Boy do I regret it - and I am writing this review to warn others from buying this poor quality product. Although some of HPs higher end printers (for businesses) work great, I recommend you stay away from this model unless you want to deal with these headaches:

* spending a LOT of money on ink and running out of ink frequently (the cartridges hold very little ink and are so expensive - this cost will FAR outweigh the up front cost of the printer)
* many many paper jams
* frequent paper misfeeds
* noisy carriage
* poor color output - skin tones look particularly unnatural

The paper input tray really only 'likes' to have about 5 sheets or less in it at a time. If you stock the input tray with more than that it often grabs several sheets of paper at once then prints a little bit of one page across many sheets. With 4x6 photos - in order to avoid the multi-sheet-grabbing problem I must only give the printer one piece of photo paper at a time. So, I can never batch print a group of photos. I must babysit the printer while it slowly prints each one. Even so, paper misfeeds often cause the photo to be off-center, or with one end of the photo completely cut off, or most often: paper jam! Even when the photo does finally print out, the color and skin tones look unnatural.

You will save yourself a lot of money and headaches in the long run by investing in a printer that has a lower overall cost-per-page. Just search around on the internet for reviews and comparisons to make an educated purchase. Best of luck to you.
