Customer Reviews:

Refreshingly elegant printer that's easy to set up. [Posted on 2008-04-08]
I bought my Deskjet 6980 on clearance for $80. I had tried (and failed) numerous times to get an older Photosmart printer to work on my Mac and the sheer nonsense of the entire thing was unbearable. Nothing ever worked. Nothing worked consistently and I wanted to throw the printer through the window.

And now I can, because the DeskJet 6980 I just bought was installed and printing quickly, beautifully, quietly and wirelessly in about one hour. The only thing that tripped me up was that I assumed I could configure the wireless settings of the printer while it was connected to my Macbook Pro over USB. I had to connect the printer to the wired router portion of my wireless router and configure it from there. It worked the first time and printed my test document (3 pages of the NYTimes.com homepage) in under 30 seconds.

Thank you, HP for finally making a printer that doesn't treat my Mac as a 2nd-class citizen and isn't a nightmare to set up. Admittedly, I'm quite a technical user, but I didn't come close to running into any issues with this install.

Another thing I like about this printer is lack of nonsense on the top of it. It was sitting next to a new Photosmart printer that had all kinds of memory card ports, plastic doors that opened and closed, a display, all kinds of buttons... this printer is gorgeous in its simplicity and doesn't try to overwhelm you with all the crazy stuff it can do (that you'll never use). It just prints. Quietly.

A fix for a setup that works for 6980 for a PC and a Mac [Posted on 2008-04-11]
After reading many of the reviews regarding setup for The HP 6980 Printer, I was driven to share a fix that works, as I have a tabletop Dell PC and a Macbook Pro. I too became very frustrated while trying to setup this printer.

The fix was to get rid of my old NETGEAR Router and purchase an Apple Airport Basestation ($180.00. Yes, expensive.... but it it lowers my blood pressure, etc., it was well worth it). Called Apple Tech Support (In The USA by the way) who helped me setup printer using ethernet connection for The PC and wireless connection for the Macbook Pro. (If, you have not used Apple Support, it is remarkable)

Now, the PC and The Macbook Pro works flawlessly with The HP 6980 Printer, each and everytime. By the way, The PC runs on XP (I wouldn't load Vista, even if Microsoft gave it to me for free). When working with Apple to setup, the Macbook Pro was running on the last version of Tiger. Once Leopard was realeased... I installed it without a hitch and the HP 6980 never skipped a beat.

Hope this helps someone out there. I think the HP # 6980 Printer is an excellent printer for home or small business usage. The only drawback for which I can agree with the previous review contributors on.... is the setup issues and HP Support from India, which leaves a lot to be desired.

In other words.... your old router (type, age and brand) might be the culprit... instead of The HP # 6980 Printer.

Extremely Painful to Install [Posted on 2008-05-02]
After fours hours of Deadliest Catch on TV, my wireless HP 6980 is still unable to detect the printer. I hook it up via USB? No love. Via Ethernet? No printer found. Wirelessly? LOL. The irony of it all is that all I'm trying to do is get my printer to use a different wireless network.

I run a software company for a living. I can't imagine what people must go through to get this printer working. No more HP, no more Lexmark for me.

Printed great photos until / And ... wow ... great HP service! [Posted on 2008-06-11]
Owned for over 2 years. I had no problems connecting wirelessly or via network. I was very pleased with the photo prints. However, my printer is a large paperweight. The ink cartridge retaining spring and the plastic mount that holds the spring in place have broken off rendering the device useless. I was always careful when replacing ink cartridges. Recommend Extreme caution when replacing yours.

Update: I contacted HP. No, I didn't call them. Rather, I used the instant chat from their web site. I explained my situation and they offered to send me a replacement printer at no charge to me DESPITE the printer warranty having expired. The replacement printer arrived at my house 2 days later. Good Job HP

Not Completely Wireless - At Least Not Mine... [Posted on 2008-07-07]
The printer works great when physically connected to my wireless router. However, when I disconnect the printer from my router and attempt to use the wireless feature on the printer, I can't access it from my laptop. Since I have chosen to place my printer pretty close to my router, this is not an issue but if I wanted to place the printer in a different room, this would be a problem... I've called HP, followed the installation protocols to the letter, still no results... Other than that, very reliable printer.
