Defective right out of the box. [Posted on 2008-01-27] I received my HP G4010 on a Saturday. After setup, the scanner would not function. All it did was make a loud clicking sound. The scanning bar never moved. I tried to contact HP's tech support by phone and online, but they only offer help during the week. Needless to say, the scanner is packed up, ready to be returned. I have ordered a Canon as a replacement. Never again will I order an HP product, and I advise everyone to avoid this one in particular.
HP Jetscan G4010 [Posted on 2008-03-06] The first one I received didn't work; likely damage in shippment. The second which was timely replaced was great. It did a good job on slides and negatives which was the reason I picked this product. The OCR software included was much better than I expected. There has been improvements from a few years ago. I am very satisfied with the product.
So far, so good [Posted on 2008-06-25] After only minimal use, it works just like I wanted. I plan on spending a lot of time with manual in hand getting to the fine points of what it can do. I purchased it mainly to preserve family photos and slides, some over 100 years old.
The Sorry Saga of my HP G4010 Scanner [Posted on 2008-07-08] I bought my HP G4010 scanner because HP said it was compatible with my computer running Vista Home Premium and could scan 35mm negatives and slides. I soon discovered that the CD supplied did not cover Vista so I opted to buy the Vista CD from HP. It would not load and had files missing so I phoned HP support somewhere in India and was sent a replacement. The second CD was the same as the first. After 8 or 9 emails and phone calls to HP analysts I was sent a third CD. This one was marked exactly the same as the earlier two, but the content was totally different - for a start the missing files were there. But this time it would not complete the installation because it said I did not have administrator rights to my computer, even though I am logged on as administrator and sole user !
The fact the one of the HP analysts told me my scanner was out of warranty even though I had unpacked it from its sealed box a few days before did not impress me, neither did the fact that a circlip promptly fell out of the unit when I picked it up. So now I have a shiny new HP scanner that's only good for a paper weight.
So if you are considering buying this scanner to run with your Vista Home Premium computer - my advice is DON'T !
HP Scanjet G4010 is a winner [Posted on 2008-07-10] This is the third scanner I've owned and the first one I have enjoyed using. Simple to operate, logical controls, excellent results.
