Great Computer ~ Glad I Got It! [Posted on 2007-07-13] Well, I've had my computer about 2 months now....and I'm really happy with it. I work from home, and have had Gateway Computer for about 4 years with NO problems...so it took a lot for me to NOT buy a Gateway, but when I saw all the options on this HP, I figured I should give it a try!
I upgraded the memory to 4GB RAM, which only cost about another $100 to do -- well worth it, and I highly recommend maxing out your RAM regardless of your computer.
So far, I haven't run into any problems with the PC. I wasn't sure about Vista at first, but now, I'm really liking that, too.
Bottom line, for the money, which worked out to be less than $1,000 for the computer, this is a top choice.
FYI, I purchased an LG 24" flat screen monitor for this from Circuit City, and LOVE THAT too! Highly recommend the 3000:1 , 2ms model -- WELL WORTH THE MONEY!
Lousy! [Posted on 2007-09-02] After many many hours, I'm now onto my second machine.
I puschased the quad version about two weeks ago and immediatly had intermitent boot problems. the system would hang up at the blue HP bios screen. the problem got worse, to the point where it wouldnt boot at all.
After spending more than an hour on the phone with HP, I was told to pack it up and ship it back to HP. Instead, I decided to just return it to Frys and get a new one.
I got the new one home and plugged it in (to a UPS). After speandng hours eliminating the crapware and installing my software, the same problem again. The PC just hangs at the blue HP screen.
Im going to return it and forget about HP for a while.
Buy a Mac [Posted on 2007-09-23] This pc crashed a few times already, lost music files. Wireless keyboard and mouse have software issues. I will buy a Mac next time.
Can you say fast? [Posted on 2007-11-07] I've been useing this for about 3 months now and the only issue was a bad keyboard that HP replaced with overnight shipping. The TV tuner was a snap to hook-up and nice to record tv shows. It came with Vista Home Premium but I wish it came with Windows XP.
The only thing is you have to basicly remove everything inside to add more memory if you desire to do so. And like another person wrote it comes with only a 300 watt power supply, not enough for a top of the line video card.
Well built and good expandability for a microATX case [Posted on 2008-01-06] The HP M8 series Intel Core 2 based media centers are solidly built and beautiful machines. Based on all standard components these machines are easily upgraded. I installed an nVidia 8600GT and a 550watt powersupply as well as a larger harddisk with absolutely no problem. The integrated remote and the great wireless keyboard and mouse make this a great media center connected to an HDTV (media center - fancy that!).
Anyway, don't believe the articles about not being upgradeable. It's no less upgradeable than any PC based on standard components, it's solidly built, good looking, and works great. My only negative is I would have liked to see it be cable-card capable.
