Won't work with Windows XP [Posted on 2003-09-29] My office gave me this printer to use. I attached it to my home computer, and it wouldn't work. I spent about 3 hours over a few days talking to tech support, and they eventually told me I had to re-install Windows XP! So I used an old Epson. Finally, I reinstalled XP about a month later, and this time it printed, but extremely slowly - about 10 minutes for a page. When I called tech support back, they said more than 7 days had passed and now I had to pay $25 if I wanted more help. If you're using Windows XP run don't walk from this printer!
Business Decision, crazy to support. [Posted on 2003-10-17] I work with technical support at my company and we deploy over 200 of these machines to our user community. The units are a disaster to support. We use Windows 2000 /w Parallel printing on P3/512MB compaq laptops. Image design is impossible, because each printer wants to install it's own device driver that prints to a non-standard virtual port called DOT4_001. Attempting to override this port to LPT1 causes your fax/scanner to fail. 3/10 times you will get the "Unable to print document due to DOT4_001 port not responding". We tried to install the printer drivers on our BASE OS image and ended up un-installing (painfully) and re-installing the printer drivers remotely for over 35% of our users. My hunch is that the 200 printers that we purchased did not have a uniform firmware version. Due to the nature of the DOT4_001 virtual port, if the user does not have the printer turned on before booting up, or tries to plug the printer in at a later time, they will most certainly receive the DOT4_001 error <- We don't know why. DONT ASSUME HP HAS HIGH QUALITY STANDARDS FOR ALL THEIR PRINTERS. Our strategic purchasing made a grave mistake buying this model from a Grand&Toy catalogue. Always test it before adopting it into your business model - AND READ REVIEWS !!
will work with XP [Posted on 2004-01-16] I've used the K80 with windows 98 for 3 years and have been extremely happy with all features. When I upgraded to XP it was a nightmare. XP along with the HP website turns your printer into a G model and it only prints. Don't try to download the XP drivers from the HP website. Finally I ordered the drivers from the HP website and they sent (the invoice was correct) drivers for a HP C20 camera. Thats when my real problem began, HP has terrible support, I was passed around 12 times in 2 hours, disconnected and just about called a liar when i tried to explain all I wanted was what I ordered (cdrom c6750-10002)and had received a camera driver cd. Some asked me my 'serial number' only to be told that my serial number didn't exist. Each area of support is independant of the other. I somehow ended up speaking with a tech located in Canada and she was the only person that sounded professional, told me my serial number was correct and sent me the correct cd. She was not able to get thru to anyone who could refund my $10 for the incorrect cdrom. I then spent another hour with sales, they have website sales, which is different than support web sales, which has hardware sales and then software sales, and they all have incompetent workers and one supervisor. They have yet to email me or phone to advise me of there decision to refund my purchase, since it would be a 24 hour decision. But my cd arrived, loaded perfectly and the k80 is again printing, scanning, faxing and copying perfectly. I will try never again to purchase a HP product until I can get through to someone in that company to ask them to call support themselves and experience a day on the phone.
Good All-in-One [Posted on 2005-01-05] I have owned the HP OfficeJet K80 All-in-One for about 2 years now and I have been quite pleased with it. First off, the price was great. You really get a lot of bang for your buck. The fax really works well and is quite fast. The printer can get noisy and shake a lot during printing, but other than that, the print quality is outstanding. The scan function is very useful and scans come out looking good. Overall, a great product for a low price.
Love this machine [Posted on 2007-02-02] This machine has been a great addition to our home office. We bought it several years ago and it still works just like it did out of the box. Our needs have chanced. I do wish it was a flatbed instead of a feed but as the machine it is it's GREAT!
