It does what it claims and the ink cartridges aren't too expensive. [Posted on 2008-07-14]
Owned one longer than we can remember, and scanned lots of documents without hassles.

Paper jams are easy to clear and it works great when recycling used sheets already printed on one side.

We like this device since it seems to be a turning point from the OfficeJet 7700 series, in other words where the 7700's use expensive ink and print heads, this 5510 uses older type cartridges w/o the complex print heads.

The color and pixel depth are more than adequate when scanning your old photo album of Polaroids and print film and the document feeder is consistent with 3x5 and 8x10 photo paper so it doesn't stretch and skew the images.

DRAWBACKS:

-Doesn't scan legal size documents

-Won't automatically duplex scan

-Lacks WiFi but this is easily remedied with a basic WiFi print server like this one from Linksys Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer WPS54G - Print server - Hi-Speed USB - EN, Fast EN, 802.11b, 802.11g - 10Base-T, 100Base-TX .

Judging from the complaints of others and our own frustrating experiences with the native WiFi built into the OfficeJet 7000 series, we're happier with an external print server.
