bad laptop 1 yr wasted [Posted on 2008-04-23] Well i bought this laptop before going to college and on paper it was a great buy for the price. probably the cheapest dualcore for the perfect 14.1 in screen with webcam and a cool looking glossy finish. But the first time i booted the system, the thing froze on me but i credit that to vista and its numerous problems. A few weeks after buying when the circuit city return period had finished, thelaptop started heating like crazy. The fans seemed to be working but the laptop was like a heater. Then the webcam stopped working and the inbuilt microphone never worked. Had it sent to hp after 3 months for repairs and got the laptop back just like i had sent it. sent it back again a few months later, same deal. this time with a torrid experience with customer support where they kept me on hold constantly and losing my ticket number and record. sent it again 3rd time cuz the display stopped working and waited 45 days only for hp to send the laptop to my home address when i explicitly told them to send it to my college address. It would be fine if the freaking thing was fixed though. apart from the display the whole thing still fumed like a grill. Soon the cd drive stopped recognizing media, which is when i called HP seeking a replacement. The technical support told me that the case managers would call me withing 24 hours which did not happen for 2 weeks after i had inquired twice. finally i called the case managers myself after getting their number. The only good thing and the reason i give it a 1 star is that hp will replace my laptop. Im hoping that the laptop i had was a faulty unit and its not the whole dv2000 series that's screwed over.
Nice kick for great price [Posted on 2008-05-05] I own this laptop (dv2610us) for about six months now and I am still happy with my purchase. Sure there were some little problems here and there but nothing crucial. For instance, there are times when the battery monitor does not come up on the screen as it should (Notification Area of the Taskbar). To solve that issue I power down, remove the battery and re-insert it again. I do this only when the System Icon for Power is not activated for my to check it.
The most alarming problem I've had was that the keyboard and touch pad was not working at all !!! To survive I used an external mouse with the on-screen keyboard to put in my password, etc. This issue was not HP's fault however, it had to do with an software upgrade (was it the BIOS ? can't remember) and a friend of mine remedied that problem.
All in all I do enjoy using this laptop and am glad I didn't go bigger or smaller. I friend of mine has the 15.4" version but to me that one feels like a waste of space and added weight (although small difference).
The preloaded games are kinda cool as well, as a means of de-stressing. I loaded CSI Miami game on it as well it managed it alright. Smooth, really better than I expected. No hiccups when I use the wireless but I haven't used that frequently, most times I just plug in the Ethernet cable and zoom zoom.
For the price I payed plus free shipping, this laptop definitely gives a good kick.
Good Laptop, [Posted on 2008-05-10] After 2 months with this laptop I don't have any complains, although it's true that the memory is not enough that's easy to fix. I think that it heats up a lot sometimes, but my girlfriend's MacBook does the same. On the other hand, it's very light and elegant (lighter than her MacBook but not as fancy as hers), its size it's perfect, the touchpad it's very annoying but I'm getting used to it. I like it very much it's exactly what I was looking for
great computer, great price [Posted on 2008-06-29] I bought this computer 8 months ago and downgraded it from vista to XP. Everything is perfect so far, but keep in mind that this is not a very powerful computer, so if you want it to play graphically heavy games or stuff like that this is not a good choice for you. perfect to play movies, music, and to work on it (ms office, etc.) and to browse over the internet as well.
If you want to keep vista it may be a good idea to buy another 1gb ram memory, for better performance, but if you downgrade it to XP like me it performs much better just as it is, however, HP doesn't provide support for this downgrades, so it might be a little bit difficult if you are not experienced.
AS IT COMES I'D GIVE IT 4 STARS, BUT IF YOU DOWNGRADE IT IT'S JUST GREAT 5/5
Great laptop! [Posted on 2008-09-07] I have had this laptop now for almost a year. I haven't had any of the major issues that others are complaining about. I have had a few minor issues though like the touchpad issue. I used the touchpad when I first received the laptop, but I hate touchpads anyways because I'm too heavy handed and I always end up clicking things that I don't intend to so I just turned it off and bought a wireless mouse.
I also don't like the fact that the battery connector is on the same side that I have to use my mouse on because it is an annoyance as pointed out by another reviewer. I would upgrade the battery also.
The laptop does get EXTREMELY hot though. I haven't had any issues related to it yet, but it scares me how hot it gets!
I have absolutely no problems with the wireless card. My laptop is NEVER disconnected from the internet unless I disconnect.
I love the memory card slot on the side which means I don't have to carry around any extra USB cords for my digital camera.
The webcam is great. I had some problems with the pc not being able to find it a few times when I first got the laptop and it took a few reboots to get it to recognize the thing. After some driver updates, it works fine now and the quality is excellent.
This laptop is loaded with great features and products. The only thing that I recommend would be to DEFINITELY upgrade your memory. After almost a year using this laptop, I am finally going to give in and upgrade as the pc is not running as fast as it did when I first got it, but I think that is due to me loading all of my crap on the laptop that runs 24/7/365!
All in all, great pc for the price I paid. It's so lightweight and I take it everywhere I go! I haven't come across any issues to make me want to downgrade the rating, so I have to give it 5 stars based off my experiences with it.
