What a Nightmare [Posted on 2007-08-18]
The Pros...
1. The screen looked great during the 3 weeks it worked
2. Have had problems with: memory, power supply, and finally the mother board -- this is the most unreliable laptop I have owned (it is my fifth laptop); it is not a mistake that this is listed as a "pro" ;)

The Cons...
1. HP support is in India. And the reps there speak english poorly; to have them trouble shoot complex tech issues reaches into the very extremes of absurdity
2. That HP sends customers who purchase $2000 laptops to agents who are unable to speak english can provide you with a pretty good indication of how much HP will value your business
3. HP hold times before reps pick up can exceed 20 minutes; this is especially bad as many of the reps who answer the phone can not solve problems (transfers cause callers to fall back into the hold queue)
4. HP IVRs (those automated phone systems) are horribley flawed and can cause customers to speak to the same non-helpful agents over and over and over again
5. For months, the techs tried to convince me that my issues were software related so they refused to comply with the HP warranty language. It was only after taking the machine to a local PC store (who did a nice job of documenting the issues), that trouble support agreed to ship me a call tag
6. Time on the phone was frequently so long that my cell phone battery died during the middle of conversations -- this situtation was especially exasperating as it put me bak to square one with the next tech

Finanlly (gasp, gasp) they are telling me that it can be as long as 6 weeks before my laptop will be fixed (this is super neat given that the thing hasn't worked AT ALL for the last 5 months).

This is my last purchase from HP.

Horrible computer! [Posted on 2007-10-10]
I have had this less than 6 months and have already had a hard drive failure. I am a busy Realtor and a heavy computer user. It took me weeks to get all my programs reloaded and running correctly again...some still aren't running right. Thank goodness I had all my data backed up but the time involved in getting this all restored was very expensive. Now, the fan motor is going bad. I just ordered a replacement. I have owned many computers and the two worst ones were HP's. I had a desktop years ago that was a nightmare and swore I would never buy another. Too bad I didn't follow my own advice! I also purchased a multifunction HP printer/scanner/fax about two years ago and it has never worked correctly. The document feeder is not usable for more than 1 page at a time, and the fix they recommend does not work.

Ninety Nine Percent Satisfied [Posted on 2007-12-29]
On November 28th, 2007 I purchased an HP Pavilion Notebook DV9260US 17" Entertainment Notebook PC (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7200, 2 GB RAM, 240 GB Hard Drive, HD Super Multi DVD Drive, Vista Ultimate).
For a week or so I wasn't sure if I would have my purchase completed because of the inept people that work or answer emails at Amazon Com.
I had earned 21 gift certificates for purchases thru my Visa Chase Card
amounting to $525.00 Since I live in New Hampshire, gift certificates never expire because of the New Hampshire State Laws. Amazon Com tried to steal some of my gift certificates by telling me they had expired and that they are sorry and can't do anything for me. When I emailed them and confronted them as to the where abouts of all my certificates they told me they expired so I would of lost my money. They actually tried to steal some of my monies. I then searched their policies in the fine print of their own Amazon Com website and found that they were quoting the same New Hampshire State law to the effect that New Hampshire residents gift certificates never expire. The emails they were sending me were "sorry you didn't redeem your certificates by the required expiration date". That's when I copied the law and sent it back to them in their own email and then they gave me my gift certificate money.
What really got my goat was when I started keying in the long certificate numbers and getting all 21 certificates in the amount of $25.00 posted to my account. In the process of doing this my internet connection dropped off in the middle of me completing one of my gift certificates and I had the number keyed in but didn't hit the enter key before the internet connection line dropped.
I then rebooted and got back onto Amazon Com's website to proceed in getting the last gift certificate redeemed into my account and their website refused to accept the certificate number and I never got credit for it. It kept telling me that the certificate had already been redeemed.
When I went to school, 21 gift certificates times $25.00 is $525.00 and not $500.00 Because of the internet line drop, somehow I lost one of my certificates. I emailed with Amazon Com people all week and couldn't get several account reps to understand my problem. It didn't do any good to call them either. They told me to call Chase Visa if I lost one of my certificates. These reps just didn't read my emails or didn't understand my problem. I again emailed all my certificate numbers and someone finally woke up and decided to research my problem and discovered that I was correct and that their website somehow gobbled up one of my certificates because there was one not accounted for as paid. I must of spent a good 6 hours on my slow dialup trying to get a lousy $25.00 that was due me.
They just didn't want to budge and thought I was trying to steal an extra $25.00 from them. Anyway I did report their tactics to the Federal Trade Commission for what good it will do. I also notice that after all the problems I had with the so called expiration date on Gift Certificates they now have decided to eliminate expiration dates. I AM NOT MAKING ANY OF THIS UP -- IT HAPPENED TO ME AND I HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE IN TRYING TO REDEEM MY GIFT CERTIFICATES WORTH $525.00
Now for the HP laptop. You think the above is some story -- well let me tell you another one. I received the laptop as promised around 4 or 5 days after I purchased it. I unpacked it and inserted the battery in it and turned it on while sitting in the easy chair with the notebook on my lap. I turned it on and followed the first set of instructions with Windows Vista Ultimate. I inserted a new login ID and password to get Windows started and activated and then configured it with the correct time and the correct time zone and then just watched the 17" screen do all sorts of configuration and approximately an hour or so later later thought it was ready to use.
I then took it over to my desk and plugged the laptop into the power supply to run it off of electricity and connected my dial-up to my phone line. I then got on the internet thru my ISP Sovernet of Vermont and noticed the computer running very sluggish. Took like 5 minutes to open up a web link. Now this is just unacceptable. I tried to get into my bank and 10 minutes later gave up. Set up my emails with the proper popmail account and proceeded to download around 40 emails. About a half-hour later only got around 12 emails downloaded -- what is the matter with this laptop being so slow downloading my emails -" so I thought" -- I then killed the email connection.
In the meantime I decided to check the status of my battery because approximately an hour and a half went by. I noticed I'm at 46 percent battery power and dropping. Now what gives -- I'm plugged into electricity and now another half hour later I'm down to about 6 minutes battery life and the laptop dies. I just got the laptop turned it on and approximately 2 hours or so later it's dead and doesn't work. I grabbed the power supply and its cold like not charging. What a discouragement -- new laptop and it's dead. I then emailed Elecsurf.Com
in New Rochelle NY and asked for a new power supply which I received within 3 or 4 days and plugged it in and guess what I now have power and the laptop works. My battery is fully charged. Let me also mention to you why the slowness and sluggish response. It's not all Vista. Please don't blame it all on Vista. While I was trying to surf the internet and trying to get my emails I was fighting the computer because it's processor hadn't finished downloading all of the initial windows and anti-virus files and whatever setup software because it just needed to do lots of different things in the background. I then spent at least a week downloading all kinds of Windows Vista Security Updates and other updates amounting to some 225 mega-bites using dialup. That's mega-bites and not kilo-bites.
I then went on vacation to Maine for a week and am now giving or typing up my review and think I will be satisfied with this laptop. My understating is that there is a service pack one coming out for Vista any day now. One of my friends has been doing Vista Beta now for two years and says he is now on Beta service pack three. It's too bad Microsoft wasn't quite ready when they released Vista. All in all I'm now happy with this 2.0 MHZ Dual Core Intel Centrino.

Worst PC ever [Posted on 2008-01-24]
First the SPDIF port doesn't work. I spent 4 hours with tech support who had me load demo versions of other companies multimedia software, since they said HP's doesn't work. Finally we gave up.

Then it hasn't been able to burn a DVD yet, using HP media. Of course it doesn't come with a Windows install disk nor a recovery disk (you'll need the recovery disk), so you have to burn one. I requested one from HP, and only a month later they sent me one.

It crashed once in a while since I got it. After a while it started crashing every 2 to 15 minutes. Working with HP support, they had me reformat the hard disk and re-install with the recovery disk. This failed. So they sent me a new recovery disk. And a week later I got to try it again, and once again it failed. Then they transferred my case to the poorly named "quality" manager. He contacted me a week and a half later. They sent me a new hard disk, which arrived with the a bracket screw half way in, at an angle, and stripped. This made the disk not fit until I was able to replace the screw. It has now been 1 1/2 months, and I have a dead PC and the "quality" manager won't get back to me.

Also note that Visa 64 does not support DRM. So although this is an "entertainment" PC, it does not work with many online music and video services.

Needless to say I won't be purchasing HP products again. I have had problems with other brands of PCs, but they were always addressed promptly.
