Buyer Beware [Posted on 2008-03-20] I bought this machine 3 weeks ago. It is very fast, the fastest desktop I have ever owned. The hard drive is a bit noisy but bearable. I was disappointed that there is no DVI output but I guess I could have researched a bit more. The thing that totally clamps my jaw is the line that says the machine is upgradeable to 8 gigabyte. No way! The CPU is 64 bit but they do not install the Vista 64 bit operating system (OS), it is a 32 bit system. I don't get it? With a 32 bit OS your can only install 4GB of memory and the system doesn't even see all of that. I confronted HP about this. Their website states directly that the machine is upgradeable to 8GB, no fine print, no asterix, nothing. I even emailed them to make sure that my computer could run 8GB. I was assured by the HP tech people that they verified the computer I bought was able to run 8GB of memory. After I read more about Vista, I emailed them again and of course got an answer from Pakistan or some such repeating to me exactly what I had just told them that the system would only run 4GB. All in all it is a good computer, very powerful but to get 8GB of memory (which I wanted for movie editing) you have to buy the 64 bit version of Vista. Not an upgrade, the full blown operating system and completely wipe your hard drive. Of course do not expect HP to give you the software for the programs which come with the machine to reload, they don't even give you the Discs when you buy the computer, not one.
Loud!! [Posted on 2008-04-07] Pros: its fast, 500gb hard drive,3gb of memory.
Cons: the hard drive is Loud !!! this computer is in my room and the loud hard drive is running 24/7, Vista is not worth having so I'm switching to Suse or Fedora Core (Linux OS's). It needs a better video card. Also there need to be a better arrangement of PCI e slots and maybe more.
If you can build your own PC, its not that hard and you will be happier with it.
Great computer [Posted on 2008-04-12] Very fast computer. Either our old one was really obsolete or this one is a speed demon. Unfortunate to say our old computer was about 5 years old and we were experiencing all types of problems. Great computer - highly recommend.
Still worth the money [Posted on 2008-04-21] At the first of the year I started shopping seriously for computers. Right away the HP media center PC's caught my eye. I would be able to hook up my Direct TV to my computer and watch, pause, and record my shows!! I first was interested in the slimline towers, the ones 1/3 the size. But they are not expandable and the tower is always hot. Then I found this one, the 8200. I read reviews and 2 things kept coming up. The system was loud, and it is not expandable to the 8gb with the current Vista 32 bit system that is included. As for the first, I found the system very quiet, moreso than my old Gateway computer. With the second, I didn't much care that I could only expand to 4 gb. But the great downfall of the computer is the Vista. I'm no whiz with computers, but it took me 2 days to put my system together, since I needed new drivers for just about every accessory I owned, and then Vista would tell me that some of the pieces of the drivers were not compatable. I even have a printer that I cannot use at all. In the near future I will probably install XP just so tht I can use some of my old stuff!!
Solid Video Editing Machine [Posted on 2008-05-01] I bought this Desktop for personal use to edit video with Premiere and do a decent amount of photo editing with Photoshop. I've owned it for 5 months now and have had no problems thus far. I tried connecting and watching TV on the device and it works well. I'm planning to connect the computer to a 37" flatscreen and watch movies running from the computer.
Solid Machine, especially for the price. I would highly recommend it. The only negative part is that the keyboard is basic, but if you buy a nice one, you've got yourself a great desktop setup.
