Best Scanner I Have Owned [Posted on 2007-08-24] Good software, easy setup and operation. The results obtained with this machine are really very good and consistent. I have owned a number of scanners and this is the best by far.
From now on I only buy HP computer stuff [Posted on 2008-01-19] The 8300 scanner is a big, heavy piece of equipment that is probably capable of doing everything HP says it will.
Unfortunately, I'll never know whether it can or not, because the software is such a joke that after several hours a day for over a week of dinking around with it and many, many calls to HP tech support, I gave up trying to get any better than 1200 dpi resolution from it and dropped it off at UPS for the return trip. More later about HP tech support.
The program will alternate randomly between two error messages, one complaining that your computer lacks memory - mine only has one Gig, and no other programs running - and your disk drive being full - after defrag, I only had a little over two hundred Gig free. I can't comment on the version of Photoshop Elements or IRIS included, I never got far enough to use either one. In fact, I couldn't load Photoshop, there wasn't a Serial Number on the disk and HP had to send me one.
I have a lot of slides and pics that need to be preserved in high resolution so they are suitable for making really big enlargements, and I'll probably try getting another acanner next year and see if the software has improved any. Before I do, unless I get more comfortable with these things I will put at least another couple Gig of memory on the machine. Maybe get a separate machine entirely. If I do, it will be an HP. My next scanner, printer, etc. will all be HPs. Why? Cause EVERY
time I called HP tech support, I got a nice, competent AMERICAN speaking ENGLISH. Wow, I didn't know that was still done.
Scans Documents well, but not TMA (slides/film) [Posted on 2008-02-25] This is nice for scanning documents. However, it does not scan slides. (on Vista). Light in lid is working. I got this primarily for scanning slides.
There is a forum on HP where other Vista users are having same problem. I will have to try on xp to see if this works there.
Update 3/3/08
A silly issue in the end. There is no indication that you have to remove plastic piece in the lid, and exert some force to do it. A note on the piece, or in the instruction book would be helpful. Tech support did not think to mention this before sending me a replacement lid. Change to 4 stars. Everything works beautifully now.
Not worth the money [Posted on 2008-05-25] I usually buy off of Amazon, but this time I bought off of CompuBizUSA to save money. What a joke? I don't advise it. They have poor customer service. My HP 8300 had glue underneath the glass and I had a hard time getting that replace. I finally got my scanner and I hate it. No matter what I do, the pictures all come out with dust, scratches and it would take me along time to clean up. I thought this would be a nice scanner. Not a good one and now I am stuck with it. CompuBizUSA does not have satisfaction guarantee. I will never buy from them again. Bad investment and I will tell HP also.
Doesn't work on a MAC at all. Works intermittently on a PC [Posted on 2008-06-07] I spent three hours with HP technical support trying to make this thing work. The things they had me try were basic, like removing and then reinstalling cables, cycling power, and like. Gee why didn't I think of that?
They blamed everything else but the scanner. When I refused to reinstall the hardware yet again, HPs solution was to request I buy a more expensive HP product.
I remember when HP produced quality products. Not anymore!
