Excellent World Cup Review [Posted on 2000-07-07]
I bought this video 4 years ago, and I found it to be an excellent review of World Cup from 1966 to 1990. However scenes from the early tournaments are quite a few. Between every tournament review, there reviews aboout best free kicks, best saves, "best" fouls, etc. I suggest any serious soccer fan to have this video on their collection.

I was expecting more from this video. Unfortunatelly earlier world championships are payed undeservedly less attention, than, for example, uninteresting 1990 championship. Very few repeats. Main attension is payed to scoring goals, not to showing other great moments of soccer. Because of short length everything is told and shown very briefly. In spite of all these weaknesses you can still enjoy the games, especially early championships competition, see a lot of beatiful moments and episods - I had not seen some of these soccer masterpieces before this video.

My subject says it all, this is a good video if this is the first one in your soccer video collection.It does have interesting action a la important matches,goals,saves,free kicks etc.

The biggest flaw in the video is their undue coverage of the matches for the third and the fourth place.Countries dont even field all their first XI for these matches and none of them have been any classics.Instead,some real good matches were not covered like the 1970 semi-final between Italy and West Germany,voted one of the best matches in the world cup history.

Also,you cant catch anything on the exploits of the 1982 Brazil team,Eusebio,Platini,Roberto Baggio.

This tape sums up the greatest players, goals, misses, saves and fouls of the world cup.

The commentary and the sequence of the games is great.

I would also recommend the "101 greatest gaals of the 82, 86, 90 world cup" video although this one is the best.

It includes some of the most spectacular, devastating and controversial moments of the world cup tornaments, featuring Pele, Maradona, Cryuff, Schilachi, Baggio and many others.

Those of us who are used to most soccer entertainment have the luxury of seeing this video in hindsight. I'll admit when I first viewed it I had mixed feelings. But, after watching a few videos of the older world cup highlights i realised this one was the best. It gives you the finest glimpses of goals from England's win in 66 to Argentina's downfall in 90. It does have a dated feel to it but, like I said before, having seen other VHSs it is the best. Compared to the very cheesy music and incredibly outdated feel of 101 Best Goals of the World Cup, you should definately choose this especially as far as whats offered on amazon. It achieves in expanding a basic knowledge of the cups in the viewing department in perfect chronological order. Lays it out nice and intelligently. Probably the best World Cup VHS document, and (though an overused statement) is a must for anyone wanting a watchable history of the glory days.
