Great idea, if it works [Posted on 2007-01-04] Maybe I got a bad unit, but no matter what I did, I couldn't get this thing to get an IP address. I tried four different routers with no luck. Unfortunately there's absolutely no way to communicate with this unless it's on a network, so if it doesn't work right out of the box, you'll never get it to work.
Multi-function capability is glitchy [Posted on 2007-02-03] I purchased two of these units, one for a CoStar label printer, the other for a Canon MP780 multifunction printer. The first IoGear print server was recognized intermittently on my local network, and after spending lots of time determining whether it I was doing something wrong, I plugged in the second unit, which was recognized instantly and reliably. So, lesson number one, as others have written, is that these units can be defective. Next I learned I was able to use it as a print server fairly reliably, both with the CoStar and the Canon. However, I simply have not been able to utilize the IoGear fully, as I can print with it, but not scan or fax. With both scanning and faxing the unit hangs. IoGear tech support said that this problem would be eliminated if I reinstalled print drivers, etc, while the IoGear was active, but that was not the case. So, if one is looking for a USB print server, providing the IoGear unit is not defective, it appears to work. But I am less convinced that this will work to support full multifunction capabilities over a local network.
Don't waste your time [Posted on 2007-04-13] I got this product today and it is already boxed up to go back to Amazon. It wouldn't get an IP address and after hours of trying and talking to tech support, I gave up. Couple this wither other bad reviews, don't waste your time or money.
This product over-promises and just plain doesn't deliver.
There might be something better somewhere but this multifunction print server is terrible. Don't say you weren't warned! I ignored the other bad reviews to try it anyway, my mistake!
Also as an update, I forgot to add the fact that the Installation CD that came with it was defective. I tried it in multiple drives and it was bad disc.
More work with wireless network [Posted on 2007-06-25] There should definitely be separate instructions.
If the print server is to be used on a wireless network, it must be connected to the wireless router in order for the print server to pick up an IP address in the same range as the wireless devices attempting to print to the server.
The print server must be on the same subnet as your computers (wireless or wired). Otherwise the computers will not be able to find the print server.
Wireless Printer Server [Posted on 2007-07-13] Using this server to connect two notebook pcs to an Epson CX3810 multi-function printer-scanner-fax via a Linksys wireless router. Easy installation with some communication issues between one of the two pcs and the printer. Tech Service contacted and they have been very helpful.
