Horrible Software, Doesn't install [Posted on 2008-03-26] The Iogear does not install properly - I tried installing this on three different computers, and it wouldn't instal AT ALL on two of them. On the third computer is works, but only with minimal usage. It makes the computer slow down drastically and even freeze. The software itself also isn't very good, but I do recognize that the software on these are generally poor, so this doesn't only hold for Iogear. Regardless, this product was a waste of time and doesn't work well at all.
It works! [Posted on 2008-04-12] This adapter is pretty small like a regular thumb/jump/flash-drive. Roughly 2 1/4" x 1" x 1/4" including the usb end. It is currently working with my belkin wireless router and is really covenient considering I didn't want to open my cpu and install any hardware. The software could have been better though, it looks almost user-unfriendly, but it really have all the basic necessities used to configure the adapter. A newbie may be turned off by the software but as long as you can read, and know what to configure, you should be OK! No problems so far!
Good product, spotty customer service [Posted on 2008-04-25] Product 5 star - bad tech support drops the rating to a 3 star. Maybe a two star drop is rough since I'm now running but...
First the product - I found software install very easy with strong signal strength picked up from my Linksys router downstairs. My problem - WEP key encryption. I didn't know where to enter my WEP key code on the wireless LAN config tool. Hence I couldn't p/u the web even though I had a strong signal.
I couldn't find anything in the install directions. I sent email to Iogear CS with no reply. Phone CS is only Mon-Fri normal business hours. Plus, when I finally was able to call during the week from home, I was on hold for quite some time. But the CS rep who answered was helpful and I was up and running after about 1 minute of tech support.
So, here is where you enter your WEP key as I cannot believe I'm the only one with this problem.
1) Open the LAN config tool window.
2) Click more settings.
3) Click change and set encryption to WEP.
4) Then click WEP encryption key setting.
5) Click change set default key to #1,
6) Enter your WEP key value in #1 field.
I was logged on immediately. I hope this helps!!
Works great! [Posted on 2008-07-25] The IOGEAR Wi-Fi 54g USB Adapter did everything it was advertised to do. It installed quickly and easily on my HP desktop, and it performed very well in a different room from the router. Browsing speed/page loading was fine. I'm very satisfied with the purchase.
LOVE IT! Works with Windows 98! [Posted on 2008-09-07] I'm still using my laptop that I bought in 2001, and it's running Windows 98. I ordered the IOGEAR Wi-Fi 54g USB Adapter from Amazon.com. I used the CD-ROM to install the drivers. Then I put the adapter in the USB slot. It quickly picked up our home's DSL signal (from AT&T) plus other signals that are floating around. Wow! That was easy. But ... even though the Iomega adapter was picking up our DSL signal, I had trouble configuring the Iomega software to connect to the internet. (Every time I'd open Mozilla, I'd get the "page not found" etc.) I almost gave up hope, but then I figured it out ... I needed to selected "SHARED KEY" to successfuly connect to our home DSL connection. AND THEN IT WORKED!!! Hurray! I've been playing internet radio continuously for hours while working on my term paper, and the connection hasn't broken up at all. Yahooo!
I have since used the adapter with my laptop to pick up wi-fi hot spots at cafes. Now I've tried it with my desktop computer running Windows XP. The desktop computer is in one room, there are two rooms in between, and the the DSL wireless router is in the 4th room. The iomega adapter still picks up the signal from my desktop. SUCCESS! So I am here buying a second adapter so that I keep one plugged into my desktop, and another to go with my laptop.
