The Good, The Bad and the Ugly [Posted on 2005-01-01]
The Good
=========
The price. Less than $1 per GB.

Power switch. Contrary to the prior review, this model does have a power switch located in the back though it doesn't cycle off immediately.

The Bad
=========
Doesn't power off when idle.

Bundled software is lacking. Norton Ghost 2003 is provided, which doesn't have the nice hard disk backup features of Norton Ghost 9.0. The IOMEGA software, Automatic Backup, has not been updated since 2002. I have not yet been able to get it to work. I have had installation problems and operational problems. You have to attend backups if you have files with long names (even with Windows 2000 and XP). You will be prompted to abort retry or ignore every time there is a problem.

If you share the device on a network, the backup speed is unbearable.

The Ugly
=========
Really noisy. Agree with the prior review that this is likely to be the noisiest thing in your entire home.

Lots of heat. It puts out so much heat you might need to crank the A/C a touch to compensate.

Software installation. Can't ANYBODY make software that installs and works right out of the box? There are certain conditions where the memory footprint continues to grow with no obvious activity (memory leak?)

I probably should have simply purchased a high capacity hard drive, installed internally and shared on the network.

Contrary to the Contrary Review on Power Switch. [Posted on 2005-03-05]
Yes, it has a power switch, but it doesn't work!!!!

Two weeks and running smooth [Posted on 2005-10-20]
Have been using this disk for over two weeks and there have not been a simgle problem with it. I'm using the 160 GB disk and it doesnt make a sound while working. Access times are also good.

I can't complain [Posted on 2005-10-26]
I can't complain. I bought it here on Amazon, it was the cheapest price around. I've been using it for a year now. Haven't been using the ghosting software, but more as a portable HD between my various computers.

Re the power switch. You can't just turn it off while it's still plugged in. You either have to turn your PC off, then push the power off switch on the drive, or you can unplug it from your PC (if you plug it in the a UBS port it's pretty simple) and then turn it off by pushing the off button.

I guess what some reviewers are complaining about is that it doesn't turn off automatically when your PC turns off. Also it's a little on the loud side. But all in all a good purchase.

IOMEGA HDD 250 [Posted on 2006-11-14]
1. It's an Iomega product but it was given to me so its free - that is good thing (I think).
2. It sounds like a cement mixer - that is bad thing.
3. It does not power down automatically at system shut down time requiring me to remember (not hard since it screams) to manually shut it down. - that is also bad thing, (a very bad thing), and from my view point represents what just what I expect from Iomega engineering.
4. It's fast - that's good thing.
5. It is an Iomega product - that is always bad (but it was a gift, "I Think").
6. Never install Iomega software or bundled software, it is consistently substandard or just marketing software (Norton Ghost) designed to encourage the purchase of the fully functional product. Just plug it in and let XP find a driver.
6. Recommendation: if and only if it is a gift - take it, but beware of "friends" bestowing (Iomega) gifts.
