Superb! [Posted on 2008-06-25] I bought this product for $99 in order to back up my G4 PowerBook. I formatted it so that 160GB became 149MB but I could successfully copy all my stuff onto this external HD. (Just for your information, I used "Carbon Copy Cloner", which is downloadable for free. It did an excellent job.) It took me some 1.5 hours to backup/copy 31GB. I don't know if this is fast or slow, but I am satisfied with the fact that I can now use this external HD as a start-up disk (with firewire). For review of other features, I will refer the reader to the rest of this review section. Incidentally, the sales price changed right after I purchased this item. Remember that I bought it for $99 plus Shipping $6.35. The seller was J&R.
DOA [Posted on 2008-06-27] I read a lot of good reviews for this hard drive, so I decided to give it a try. Maybe it's because I have a Mac, I don't know, but my drive didn't work for me at all. I looked under system profiler to see if my MacBook Pro recognized it at all; it showed up as a firewire device but that was it. I even tried to see if my Windows XP virtual machine would recognize it; it didn't. I got an error message. I'd also like to mention I tried both the firewire and USB cables that came with the drive; neither worked. I ended up getting an RMA from Amazon the day after I received it.
HOT to the Touch [Posted on 2008-07-17] RE: Iomega Portable Hard Drive, FireWire 400/USB 2.0, 160GB
This product gets VERY HOT while running. It is HOT to the the touch. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
external hard drive [Posted on 2008-08-26] I moved files, such as pictures, from my internal hard drive onto the Iomega, thereby freeing up much needed space. The product worked nicely for me. However, after the file copy, this product became very warm. Therefore, when not in use, I keep the unit powered off (switch is in the back).
Small and reliable [Posted on 2008-09-03] This drive has a very small footprint, and installed seamlessly on a Windows XP machine as a backup drive - I didn't even have to install the software on the enclosed CDROM. Also, it showed up remotely (using Go 2 My PC) immediately after install and has never failed, after about five weeks of constant use. That's quite a nice combination. Superfast install, reliable, and small footprint. This would even make a suitable audio drive (for smaller projects). I'd buy another one if I need this size again.
