Kensington Auto/Air Adapter [Posted on 2008-01-26] The unit works great with everything except the new Sony Vaio that I bought for this trip. When I contacted Kensington, sure enough, even though Vaio is listed on the tips available, you have to look at the fine print, because there are certain models not covered. So now I have a brand new adapter that I can't use.
Excellent Power Pack, but .. [Posted on 2008-01-27] The Kensington Power Pack is very Good. It does have 1 drawback that is easily overcome, namely the short wire to plug into an AC outlet. But, I do not consider that a problem. There is one thing to be cautious about. When using it on some airplanes, the power supply shut down. I suspect this is perhaps the airplane's DC power supply unable to supply sufficient power to the Power Pack. It's happened twice to me. On all other occasions, it's worked flawlessly. I'd still recommend this to any road warrior.
It's the LONG cord that was the problem! [Posted on 2008-02-23] I purchased a Kensington 33197 in early 2006. I loved using it - it's light and slim and the short AC cord didn't bother me. After a little less than a year, the charging became intermittent. The charge light would go on and off like the connector was loose. It turned out that the long cord - from the power brick to the laptop - was failing at the connector to the laptop.
Kensington support offered to replace the cord for free - nice - but then it took three more support contacts and seven weeks to actually get the cord - not so nice.
8 months later I was on a week long business trip when the new cord failed in the same way - this time suddenly and permanently. If my client hadn't had a compatible Dell power brick, I would have been dead in the water.
I replace the Kensington with an iGo Everywhere130 PS00099-0008 Universal 100 Wattt AC/DC Notebook Adapter with Dualpower. It's bigger and bulkier - especially the cables and connectors which are so heavy duty it looks like they'll last a thousand years! Not so slick and light as the Kensington - just made to last under travel abuse.
works for me on planes trains and in foreign hotel rooms [Posted on 2008-03-09] I use this with my laptop (a thinkpad), my cellphone (treo), and my iPod. It does everything it's supposed to, and extra tips for are both less expensive and easier to pack than entire travel chargers, as I used to bring.
As others have complained, the short cord from the transformer to the all outlet is odd. Also, given the modular design of this thing, you would think Kensington would sell versions of that cord designed for different sorts of international outlets. As it is, I sometimes need to bring several outlet adapters along, in addition to the K33197. As the adapters never sit in the wall very well, and the transformer ends up hanging from them via its super-short cord, it often pops out of the wall unless I prop it up on a pile of books, or hang it from the arm of a chair with the loop of velcro intended to help control the cable for packing. It works, but it's not elegant.
On balance, I am pleased with it. With a bit more polish, it could have been a lot more useful for international travelers.
Also, why no Apple Macbook tip?
worked like a champ on my IBM [Posted on 2008-05-01] Doesn't work for my Dell - they make one but then I need to purchase a second unit. Either way, the unit leaves up to its promised and worked for the machine I purchased for
