Customer Reviews:

Good value for the price [Posted on 2008-05-19]
Comfortable, light weight & provide good range as used primarily with an iPod, MP3 player or desktop CD drive. Using these players the Koss UR40's will not handle the dynamic high/low end ranges from Telarc's "1812 Overture;" otherwise, the headphones give a fair accounting. EMI's "Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World" has never sounded better at work from the CD drive. A friend was amazed at the clarity when used with his iPod & said he had to purchase the UR40. They are not high-end quality, but an exceptional value for the price & highly recommended.

Solid collapsible headphones [Posted on 2008-06-09]
I needed a set of headphones for travel purposes, so I was looking for:
(1) Collapsible
(2) Comfortable to wear for long periods
(3) Not too much sound leakage, nor completely noise-canceling
(4) Solid sound quality

These headphones do fine on all 4 counts. The treble is not great, but it's not bad either, and the headphones are really comfortable. Compared to the Sennheiser PX-100s, these Koss headphones don't fold up into as tiny a unit and are a touch behind in sound quality. In the end, I went with these over those Sennheisers because of the noise issue, since these Koss headphones are better at keeping outside sounds out and inside sounds in, in my opinion. If you're not as concerned about the noise issue, I'd give the nod to the PX-100s over this one.

5 years of daily use [Posted on 2008-07-09]
I bought these headphones about 5 years ago from a (now defunct) local CompUSA. They were bargain bin items at the time, and I picked them up for about 25$. For the price, this may have been the single best purchase of my life.

The sound quality is as stated in other reviews, not "audiophile grade" but certainly better than expected from a 25-40$ headphone.

What surprised me was their durability. These headphones have spent every single day of the last 5 years in and out of my (soft) laptop case/backpack, stuck between 2 hard drive enclosures and random other junk.

About a year ago, the right can's cable worked its way loose from the stress relief grommet. The can still worked fine. After another year of my habitual "wind it around the folded headphones" cable storage method, it finally let loose and shorted the right ear.
After 5 years.

All the paint has worn off them, and they're now white instead of silver. The vinyl covering the foam has held up perfectly, which is amazing considering my hair has destroyed 6 sets of headphone's covers in far less time (6 months or less).

Still, all of this in a sub-40$ headphone? The only reason I haven't taken advantage of the warranty is that I'm fairly impressed at what it took to kill them, and am considering just replacing these and keeping them as tribute.

Not perfect, but comfortably close. [Posted on 2008-07-10]
I actually owned a pair of these before, which I bought at our local Radio Shack. Unfortunately, I managed to close my font door on the cord through my own stupidity, then proceeded to tug on it like an idiot until it severed, hence requiring me to buy a replacement pair, which is, to an extent, beside the point, but not quite.

See, I loved these headphones enough to gladly buy the exact same make to replace my lost pair. They might not jolly the rogers of really hardcore audiophiles, but for a casual music fanatic like my self, they're exemplary. Certainly the best headphones I've ever owned. The sound is clear, and certainly surpasses the quality of any cheapo pair you could ever buy. I've found that it retains sound quality even at high volumes, and the over-the-ear design is both comfortable, and forms a certain barrier against outside noises. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten lost in my music during a long walk around the lake, or to work, thanks to these. Interestingly enough--and this might sound silly--but my favorite part though, has to be the mesh hammock. I have a peculiar head shape, and the nerves of my scalp and skull are so sensitive that even light pressure can give me migraines. Regular headphone bands are painful, and padded ones, only slightly less so (usually I find the cushion to be stiff, uncomfortable, and only a source of added pressure, but the unique mesh really gives the sensation that you're not wearing them at all. Even it's slightly clunky appearance is endearing in my opinion; my huge silver UR40s are my most noticeable fashion statement, and everyone knows me as the girl who wanders Magnolia with her headphones.

I'll probably trade up to something better eventually, I'm sure, when I have the time and money to really go shopping, but for now, the UR40s are all I could ever ask for.

Very good headfone [Posted on 2008-09-13]
I really recommend buy this headphone. Excellent sound output at this price. There are 2 reasons for me not giving this product a 5 star rating is..

1) Little too bulky although collapsible.
2) There is no microphone built with it. Other products like Planotronics have microphones along with the headphone at the same price.
