Great Drive [Posted on 2008-07-31] I got this LaCie drive based on the great performance we saw with the 1TB model at work. I'm using it with an iMac and Mac OS X 10.4 to store all of the video for a film I'm producing. So far it's proven to be fadt and reliable, which is what I want in a drive. (I'm using Firewire 400 since that is what the iMac supports.)
A pretty good ext. HD [Posted on 2008-08-05] I recently upgraded my Lacie ext. Porsche design 160GB HD to the d2 Quad 500GB HD. And I am not disappointed. I have connected the same with firewire to my computer. The setup is straight forward and easy. The backup software found with the HD is basic but functional. You may wish to upgrade this. Otherwise, the disk runs very quietly and efficiently, hardly noticed that it was there. It does warm-up, which is to be expected but does not heat up. All in all I would recommend this product.
Quiet, reliable (hopefully) storage [Posted on 2008-08-08] This is my fourth LaCie drive, over a period of about ten years. None of them failed on me--I've just upgraded because I needed more space, and since I've had such good luck with LaCie, I stuck with them. This one was bought specifically to replace a Fantom drive that I made the mistake of buying because it was so cheap. That one crapped out after only about 3 years of only occasional use, and it will certainly be my last Fantom drive.
This is a very quiet unit, and does what you want from storage--it stores lots of stuff! LaCie rocks!
Very satisfied. [Posted on 2008-08-14] This was relatively simple to assemble - just took a while to figure out the cables. it seems to be working very well, and gives us great peace of mind.
Works like a champ! [Posted on 2008-08-18] I recently purchased 2 of these 500 giggers from Amazon for my Macbook Pro. I read these work real well with Macs and I wanted one to use for video storage with iMovie, and the other to use with Time Machine as a backup. Their setup was easy as pie. Just plug them in, the Mac sees them instantly and kicks in their Lacie format wizard. In a quick 2-3 step process, I had them formatted in the MAC OS X Extended format in just minutes. I made my first Time Machine backup (and several since), and moved my video files (iMovie events) off. These drives are very quiet, look cool, and just work like a champ!
