So Far So Good/ Great [Posted on 2008-04-20] I have read alot of bad reviews of Lacie product and a lot of good ones. Some say there is a horrible clicking noise, well, this wasn't true for the one I bought. Not all HD are perfect but, so far this one has been.
Its not to install. Less noise than any WD product Ive bought.
The only problem I have had has not been annoying or that hard to fix. Sometimes Lacie will unmount off of the desktop and I simply had to turn it off and back on. NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL.
Like I said so far so good. I would definitely recommend this one.
Perfect for These First Three Hours. [Posted on 2008-04-23] I purchased this as an adjunct for an 8-month-old iMac that was fast gobbling up its internal 320GB HD with backup files -- and for which I'd just installed OS X 10.5 (Leopard). The idea was to isolate and control the monster space requirements of the new Time Machine backup utility. The hook-up and set-up were done in ten minutes, and then I was amazed to see Time Machine hop right in at the end to ask if I wanted to start creating backups on my new drive. Since Time Machine had read my mind, I gave permission and the quiet (there's no fan!) operation took all of 111 minutes to back up 200GB through my Firewire 800 port. Positives: the LaCie 301826 was in-stock and arrived promptly, all the cords and connections are included, Mac set-up is a breeze, it looks nice, it's compact and unobtrusive, it didn't get hot (even if the corrugated-heat-sink claim looks like a stretch), the auto-off feature is a great idea if it works, it seemed to move data fast, and it's pretty quiet. Only one negative: it's really a 700GB drive in terms of usable space. I'll report if anything changes in the next three hours, or beyond, but so far this HD is a winner.
Four stars until I know about durability [Posted on 2008-04-24] I am perhaps premature in writing a favorable review of this device. I have had it for only a month. I have another LaCie (for Time machine) in the same genus -- corrugated sides. I thought long and hard about buying two devices from the same manufacturer. I will feel very foolish if/when they both crash on the same day.
But I was won over by the ease of installation, cool running and dead quiet operation of the first drive. I also liked the fact that I could daisy chain the drives with an included firewire connector. This lets me save a port on the Mini.
Only time will tell about the reliability of these LaCie drives. I don't expect them to last forever. Hard disks used to be rated in terms of MTBF -- mean time before failure -- something I always keep in mind. Thus two drives. I just hope I don't end up feeling foolish.
very quiet, good connections, nice new case [Posted on 2008-05-12] ordered and received this hd within 3 days (gotta love amazon prime), plugged it into my MBP and it made horrible sounds and didn't mount - figured it was "DOA", used the amazon "call me" feature, and they sent out another one right away. the second one got here two days later and it's been working like a charm ever since.
