Even with a redesign they are flawed [Posted on 2008-01-22]
I have purchased a few of these drives and been generally disappointed. I have a 33% failure rate on them one year out. There are serious overheating issues, as is obvious on the redesigned version, which now includes an unattractive vent on one side. In spite of this, the drives still overheat and won't mount properly. Porsche Design has been a pillar of good design, but this is not worthy of bearing the name.

I was looking for a backup drive and thought the price and capacity of the LaCie F.A. Porsche external drive looked good. At first I was a little put off by the power cable (I've seen other drives that do fine with just the power from the USB port), but the cord is good and long and it worked fine. Also, for all the hoo-ha about F.A. Porsche designing the thing, it's just a silver brick. *I* could have done that. But anyway...
It worked well and I was able to do backups, including imaging my existing drive and setting up regular backups of the data. But after a couple of months (I've had it for about 6 months now and only turn it on intermittently), it began humming and buzzing. The humming isn't too bad, but it's amplified by the PC case it sits on and I had to find some foam to put under it to stop some of the noise. The buzzing is intermittent and worrisome -- this is supposed to be a backup drive, after all.
I almost opted to buy a kit and build my own external drive from a brand name hard drive. I don't quite regret not doing that, but I would definitely go that route next time.

I had heard a lot about this specific hard drive, and had heard great things about Lacie in general. Thus far, knock on wood, the drive has been working perfectly. I use it for external storage on a MAC G4 editing Final Cut Pro version 4.1, and it works like a charm. No lag, easy to format and partition, and thus far has given me no problems. I highly recomend it, especially for tasks like video editing.

Does all it should and cheaper than hell for what they are. Over time they do wear out, two years on one and strange clicking noise apparently from electrical problem. These will gradually be phased out for flashmemory, but in the meantime, they look cool, hold a lot of stuff, work very well with apple, they are fast, cheap, good

We purchased LaCie to back up photo material. After only four months, with gentle use, the drive quit functioning and made a beeping noise. I called the company, they were very familiar with the problem and said the drive is broken and cannot be repaired. Also, the warranty does not cover data recovery, and has stipulations regarding where one can have their data recovered without compromising the warranty. What a disappointment.
