A GREAT addition. [Posted on 2007-12-09]
When I bought my notebook with a 60GB HD, I deliberately got a 7200 RPM drive. I also thought that 60GB would last forever.... . Now, with a digital camera that takes 4MB pictures and with things like Streets & Trips consuming a GB, it's just not enough.

I wasn't sure how well a USB HD would work but this is SUPER. Even better now that I've matched it with MojoPack (www.mojopack.com) so I've got a device that I can use on ANYONE'S computer. The ultimate in portability, I'm really pleased.

The two minor complaints: my firewire connection doesn't match any of their cables so I'll need to buy that and the plug-in to the LaCie USB cable isn't very secure and slips out pretty easily so you can't be bumping the cable at all!

Bottom line though: I'd never know the difference between this and my onboard hard drive. The speed is SUPER!

I've used LaCie drives for years and they seem to fail far less often than other drives I've used (WD, Seagate, Maxtor.) Perhaps one of the reasons that my hard rives fail often is that I tend to be a little rough on them. I edit video, often on location, so I drag my drives all over the place. I'm hoping with it's rubberized shell, this LaCie will go the distance. I love that it is self-powered so I don't have to lug a power adapter with me. It's one of the few portable drives that is fast enough for video editing. I purchased the case for it as well to further protect it. I'll update this review if it dies.

Nice external addition [Posted on 2008-08-25]
I purchased this to use with my 15" MacbookPro. It's a speedy little drive that works great via the included Firewire 800 cable. That coupled with the 7200 RPM rotation, and cache, makes it hard to tell this is a portable, external drive.

The throughput of the device allows me to run VMware and Parallels images on the external drive. I have Windows XP SP3, Ubuntu, and even Vista Business images on the drive. The performance makes it hard to tell it's an external drive. The XP installation on the LaCie, in particular, is noticeably faster than the native XP on my Dell D420 laptop!

I would highly recommend this drive, especially if your setup is similar to mine.

I use this drive to record music performances with ProTools. I have carried it around the world this year and it works flawlessly. The 7200 rpm rotational speed makes it perfect for music editing and mixing.
