A very moving Score [Posted on 2007-08-30] Wow, this is James Newton Howard's finest work since the like of: "Morked For Death", "Outbreak", or "Waterworld". It is most certainly his best work of all of the M. Night Shyamalan films. There is a central moving theme in this score that wrapped itself like a blanket around my heart as I listened to this CD. I think those of you who liked this CD know the melody that I am talking about because it probably touched you too. That melodic theme alone makes this CD soooo worth having. However the reason why I gave this CD 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the 4 pop tunes written by Bob Dylan at the end of it. They simply did not grab me in any way. I think it would have been far better to hire one of todays popular female artists and have her perform a theme song based entirely on the moving melody that I mentioned before. The first few times I heard that theme that I love so much, I felt tears of joy well up in my eyes. This CD is soo good just for the score alone.
One of the greatest soundtracks [Posted on 2007-09-29] This is probably on my top 5 soundtracks of all time. It is simply amazing. My favorite tracks are prologue, charades, and healing. If your only going to buy a couple then those are the ones.
Lady in the Water soundtrack [Posted on 2007-10-30] The music is very relaxing as well as dramatic in portraying the show. It helps you relive the show just by listening to the audio.
One of JNHs better scores [Posted on 2008-01-29] It seems that M. Night Shyamalan brings out the best in James Newton Howard. All of my favorite scores written by the popoular composer are to films by that director: Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, and now Lady in the Water. This score has a great theme, and the last few tracks of score are phenomenal. There are a few songs tacked on at the end which I don't care for--all covers of Bob Dylan songs, I think. If you've liked Unbreakable or the Village, you'll like this one too. It's on the level with those. Probably better than the former, not quite a good as the latter.
What the score for The Golden Compass should have been [Posted on 2008-02-16] I bought this CD after successfully managing to hunt down what that wonderful music in the Golden Compass Coming Soon trailer was. Sure enough track 11 "The Great Eatlon" from 2:07 contains that wonderful grand music heard when the airship flies out over the city and later on in the trailer.
I have not even seen the Lady in the Water movie and from what I understand it was gotten mixed reviews, but this soundtrack is wonderful. After the huge disappointment at the terrible music that was actually in the Golden Compass, this CD has become my substitute for that and I like most of the tracks on the album as many contain that theme from track 11 I love so much.
So yeah, great film score and my first Newton-Howard CD. I am so glad to have discovered this composer and really wish they had gotten him to do the music for the Golden Compass.
