You get what you pay for [Posted on 2007-01-03] This printer was purchased for an elderly relative who above all cherished simplicity and reliability. The printer is simple to use, with printing and ink replenishment fairly straightforward. Be warned though that like other inexpensive printers, it can easily gulp down several sheets of paper at once -- a nuisance.
The scanning works, but beware that color replication is poor and the output often fuzzy. Don't think of this printer as a copier replacement, either B&W or color.
Love this machine. [Posted on 2007-02-14] The printer, copier and scanner work great and using the functions is not overly complicated. However, the size of the ink cartridges leads to frequent replacement purchases. Do not purchase if you are printing a high volume of pages. Otherwise it is a great machine for the money.
Good value; easy setup; decent software [Posted on 2007-07-28] I was a little reluctant to purchase this (even at $40) because of a bad experience with a cheap Lexmark printer a few years ago, but I bought it and I could not be happier. I mainly wanted it for scanning (I despise paper clutter). Its footprint is not much larger than the old scanner that it replaced, plus now I can copy and print in color as well.
The installation was very simple with step by step instructions included. The scanning software could not be easier to use. The only gripe I would have is that while the scanning DPI can easily be changed using a drop-down list box prior to scanning, there is no selection for 100 (72, 150, 200, and 300). 72 DPI does not produce sufficient quality and 150 is a bit too large. So, I scan into PaintShop pro and resample/resize the image. Not too much of a hassle, but would have been nice if 100 DPI were an option.
I can't comment yet on the print quality because I have yet to print anything other than the printer cartridge alignment page.
My son has a similar Lexmark printer and he says the print quality is very good.
For the price, you can't go wrong.
WORKED GREAT FOR TWO YEARS [Posted on 2007-08-09] I bought one of these printers two years ago for $[...] at Best Buy, and it worked great until two days ago when a plastic band about 14 inches long and 1/8 inch wide popped loose inside of it. It now makes a clunking sound and will not print or scan. Since I have four brand-new spare cartridges for it, I wanted another printer that used the same ones. I could not find one locally, but Amazon had it for $6l.28 with free shipping. It was $79.99 plus shipping on the Lexmark website. I purchased it on 8/7 and it is scheduled for delivery tomorrow 8/l0. I am very happy that I was able to find what I wanted for such a good price and get it in such a short time.
Works 40% of the time, all the time! [Posted on 2008-06-13] I bought this printer a while ago as a back up printer, therefore I wasn't looking for quality. Even though I bought it for a inexpensive price no printer should work so unreliably. The paper doesn't sit squarely in the paper loader, so each time I print I have to baby the paper through the printer. It has such a hard time pulling the paper through itself. The paper jams 3 out of 5 times I try to print anything. When the paper jams or it can't pull the paper in a window pops up on the computer screen and yells "CAN'T LOAD PAPER IN AUTO SHEET FEEDER" and scares me to death. As for the quality of the prints it makes, even on the highest photo quality printing settings, the greyscale literally prints out as all the same greys, and the color turns out very unaccuratly. The scanner is decent, but bleaches any colored artwork or graphics that you mught want to be getting a decent quality scan of. If a company is going to make a printer they should atleast make sure it can do the most simple jobs right.
