Wow. Live TV on my Powerbook from any internet connection! [Posted on 2008-05-03] OK, it's everything you thought it was. Watch live TV on your MAC, or get the locationfree base station to show other video thru the 2 additional plugins in the back (including SVHS)
If you are the least bit techy, you want one of these. LF basestations are pretty cheap (got mine for $99) and if you have a LAN you will love how the software works. It does not follow the ease and beauty Apple users are used to (kinda of a hacked together Windows version, ported over), but it does work. Compressions seems a little high when you blow the picture to full screen, and it only seems to do 800x600. There is a lag as you change channels of about 3-5 seconds, as the signal leaves, goes to the basestation, and the new channel is fed to you via LAN - that is to be expected.
My complaints are minimal - you will give it a 4/5 if you have EyeTV, as the quality is not as good (to me) and the setup is overly complicated; with an 'easy' and 'custom' mode, the easy mode requires way too much work. One of the reasons it is cheap and available for a good price is the average consumer gave up on the setup and returned it. It works as advertised, however - pick up the hardware as a refurb, plug in your cable tv hookup and buy this software to watch TV from anyplace there is a wifi connection. My setup - digital cable to pick up the basic channels, and a converter tuned to the scifi channel as my 'video one' feed, leaving me a 'video 2' feed for a dvd/etc feed - there are setup commands allowing you to turn attached equipment on/off if they use infrared for control.
Software is worth every penny I paid, and it arrived in 2 days (no download is available, you have to buy this dvd) and works as advertised. Geeky but cool.
