Customer Reviews:

works well for the most part [Posted on 2008-04-23]
I have owned several different trackballs from several different companies.
Thus far the Trackman Cordless Optical rates very high for my standards.
It's very comfortable to use, and delivers precise functionality. So far my only complaints are not over the actual unit but it's software.
The drivers work fairly well, but I've noticed I've had to reboot Vista on various occasions because the mouse simply would not work. Secondly, it has no support for per application settings. This is very important for me because I am a graphics designer working with both 2D and 3D programs.
There is a 3rd party software you can download, however, which vaults it back into standings. My only real complaint with the unit itself, is the cordless feature. Being in graphics, I generally have enough to worry about. I don't like having to worry whether my batteries are going to die on me midway through a heavy project. The batteries will last for quite awhile, but when they do finally die, usually there is very little warning, and you're left wondering if it's the batteries, or the actual unit breaking down. If Logitech were to make a corded version of this product I'd be all over it.
Personally the best trackball I've ever used is the Microsoft Trackball Explorer. I've had it, and used it for 7 solid years, and to this day, it STILL works perfectly.
The WORST I've ever used was the Kensington Wireless Expert Pro.
I was absolutely disgusted with the Kensington. First off, it had NO easy way to clean it. Cleaning it properly entailed disassembly, of the chassis to clean the sensors. Secondly, it was very uncomfortable to use, and the web wheel was in an awkward position. Thirdly, it's drivers were absolutely abominable, and at first it refused to work on XP regardless of it's compatibility. Finally, the left click button flat out broke after only 6 months of operating the mouse. Since Kensington are mainly Mac products I can see why they produce such shoddy craftsmanship.
Needless to say I will NEVER buy another Kensington product.
This trackman VASTLY outperforms the Kensington, and if you're thinking of buying a Kensington, DON'T. Stick to Logitech or Microsoft. They are the best in the business, and you virtually cannot go wrong with them.

Sort of an odd combination... [Posted on 2008-04-27]
Things I like:
- Very ergonomic. Feels good in the hand, and the buttons and track ball fall right at your fingertips.

Things I don't like:
- Track ball is too friction-y. Ever used a Logitech mouse with "hyper-scroll"? Should be like that. With this trackball, pointer is jerky if you set your pointer motion at all high; and the trackball stops dead the instant you let go.
- Tracking isn't the best. It tracks well up to about medium-slow movement. After that, the faster I move, the tracking actually slows down. It's as if the eye starts losing count of the dots passing by.
- What exactly is the point of a wireless trackball if it requires a big, long-tethered receiver coming off the computer? Kinda defeats the purpose.

Other things I would do to improve it:
- Since it's got a scroller, I'd make it a hyper-scroller.
- Better software. I couldn't assign the functions I wanted to the specific buttons I wanted. And in some cases the assignments didn't do what I expected.

5 stars = I'm evangelizing it to all my friends
4 stars = I'm pleased with it
3 stars = It'll do
2 stars = Looking for a replacement
1 star = Actively disparaging it to all my friends

Good device [Posted on 2008-04-28]
modern and comfortable input station.
Riliable... I am happy That I got it.
the only thing is, it could have been smaller,
It is too big for any person hand.
but nothing is perfect. I do recommend it anyway.

Old reliable [Posted on 2008-05-09]
This model has been around for a long time. It is an excellent gaming mouse in that you can get excellent response with fingers as opposed to a thumb wheel. Unfortunately, if you hammer it during a game (not recommended), the ball gets slightly dented and hard to use. Fortunately you can buy replacement Trackballs at Logitech for $2 each.
A good, reliable Trackball. After using it for a relatively short time, you will not want to go back to a mouse.

Nice design, really low DPI [Posted on 2008-05-10]
This mouse has all the buttons and wheels exactly where I want them. The receiver works perfectly, but the ball is horrible.

Out of the box it is off by about 45 degrees, and you have to install the (Windows-only) software to correct it. But nothing can correct the DPI. It's like using one of those really really old bad mice when the rollers got dirty: it jumps from one place to another without ever passing the pixels in between. Maybe I got a lemon?

The software replaces the normal mouse settings in the control panel, so if you switch to another mouse you cannot adjust the settings on it. So basically, if you use this track ball, you can never go back. Warning: Make a system restore point before installing the software!
