Customer Reviews:

Features are great--until it stops working. . . [Posted on 2008-08-07]
Just had to add my two cents to everyone else's reviews. I fully agree that the functionality of this remote is excellent. I used it to replace a TV, cable box, receiver, and CD/DVD changer remotes. Setup is a breeze with the USB interface, and the remote did exactly what I wanted it to do and had good range as well. Great deal for the price I paid--was only $50 when I bought it.

Having said that, however, I am pretty disappointed with the longevity of the remote. I have owned it just over one year now, and yesterday the majority of the buttons just flat out stopped working. The off button still works, but the rest (channels, volume, device macros) all will not control any of my devices. I realize we live in a throwaway electronic society, but I would have expected more out of this remote control. It's possible I may have just gotten a bad chip or something, but given some of the other reviews on here, it seems to be somewhat of a systematic problem.

To sum up, it's a great product, especially for the price, but just be aware that it may not last as long as you would like.

Great remote, but must disassemble and clean [Posted on 2008-09-13]
This is the best remote I've ever had. After two years a few buttons intermittently stop working. I disassembled ( 6 screws ) and cleaned the back of the buttons and the contacts on the pcb with a q tip. It works great again.

1. remove two screws in back top
2. remove batteries, then two screws in battery compartment
3. pry unit apart carefully with small screwdriver or knife
4. remove two screws from pcb near the battery connection
5. pull out pcb and button assembly.
6. clean back of buttons and contacts on pcb with q tip

Functionality is Great, Buttons Wear Out [Posted on 2008-09-18]
Others have extolled the virtues of how easy it is to set up and control all of your home theater equipment with this, including gaming consoles (although it can't turn on a Wii; I think this is more the Wii than the remote, but you can use the Wii controller to turn it on). I won't go into details other than to say yes, it makes controlling a complicated setup with TV, receiver, game consoles, DVRs, DVDs, etc a breeze. And if something goes wrong (like the dog walks between you and a component while turning it on or off), the HELP button walks you through.

My only issue is I've had mine for about two years, and the buttons are starting to go. These are cheap rubber ones, and much like similar buttons on my home's wireless phone handsets, they are starting to die after regular use. Have to really play with the system power button now to get it to turn on or off, and other oft-used buttons (like Menu) are starting to have trouble responding.

I will certainly be buying another Harmony remote in the future, but I may have to step up to get some buttons that will last longer. If I'm going to spend this much money on a remote, I want it to last.

Great Remote [Posted on 2008-09-23]
I love this remote. Easy to program and has macro keys on the top that give access to your favorite utilities that you use the most. Only downside is the batteries only last about 2-3 months.

Excellent...while it lasts! [Posted on 2008-10-03]
I've owned this remote for about 13 months. First let me say, it has a solid feature set and it works as advertised. I control a Samsung TV, a MacMini, a Pioneer 5.1 sound system and a Tivo all from the same remote. The setup is relatively easy (could be more intuitive) and it's still customizable. It's a little annoying that you have to have an online account to set it up, but for the most part it's worth it.

But now it's starting to wear. The play, pause, fast forward and skip forward buttons take extra ooomph to work. They used to work great. Maybe as a Tivo user I rely on them too much? I honestly don't know. But now, I have to really press on them for it to work. I imagine in another month, it will become unusable.

I had expected this remote to last the life of my Television and Tivo. Eight-five dollar is a a steal for this remote. But $85 ever 14 months is a complete rip.
