Disappointing waste of money.... [Posted on 2001-01-01]
It is very disappointing to see how little progress EA has made with this game over the years. I first played Madden years ago on the original Sega video game, but it was pretty weak because it did not allow the user sufficient control of the playing field and the plays in general. My wife bought me this for Christmas this year and I was shocked to see many of the same problems still exist. I used to love playing Techmo on the original Nintendo, and even though the graphics are not very good, it is still head and shoulders over Madden.

Really, the only difference between this and the older version is that they have added a heap of difficult-to-navigate menus that really take away from the game. Another problematic area for this game is the techniques required to pass a freakin football. Some pass plays can be completed by pressing the return key, while others can't. In some cases, the user has to press 5 keys just to pass the ball. Against a good defense, this leaves little or no time to get the ball off. As for player movement, the graphics are slow and choppy and the players accelerate in a quick, unnatural manner. I would expect this sort of problem from older less sophisticated games, but not from a franchise like madden that's been around for ten years. Another problem is the absolute lack of control on the defensive side of the ball. As a player, you will quickly find that you have little or no power to stop, sack or disrupt a play. It is almost like role playing in that you pick a defense and just hope that it stops the play. You do have control over a single defensive player, which you can change, but its pretty useless.

Take my advice, try some of the others out there before you waste money on this....

Typical EA [Posted on 2001-01-03]
Another year, another Madden. All eye candy, no artificial intellegence. The player ratings are useless!

Yech...and people complain about other games more... [Posted on 2001-04-24]
Let's list the good and bad of this game: Pros: Graphics, and uh... Cons: Interface, sounds, gameplay, player editor, franchise mode, Madden and Summeral drolling on and on...

It's bad enough to listen to John and Pat every Sunday during football season go on and on about the Rams or Cowboys. I don't need them doing it here. The Franchise mode, a mode that excells in most games, is ridiculous here. Often times, you'll have anywhere from 10-20 players injured at one time, and I'm not kidding you. You'll have to fill out your roster with free agents, and then you'll probably lose your games. One season I played, I simulated a game (mind you, if you play every game manually, no one will be hurt) and discovered that EIGHT (!!!) players were injured for the remainder of the season. Now, I know this is football, but c'mon!

The interface is absolutely horrendous. The mouse will slow down if you play too long, as will the game. It appears to suffer from a serious memory leak, but EA refuses to make a patch for it, despite the fact that I've seen this happen with other games and they all required a memory leak patch.

This series has yet to put out a quality game for the PC. Save your 10 or 15 bucks and go take your significant other to see a movie.

What are you saying? 1 star? [Posted on 2001-12-06]
Good game. I like the music. The game runs good on a 95 and 98. The players have fair graphics. But if it runs bad turn the graphics down you won't miss much. I have bought NFL fever 2000 and to those of you who have NFL fever 2000 heres the comparison:

NFL FEVER
Easier controls. Too easy, its played more like pinball after awile. Too dark. Not as fun.

MADDEN 2000
Better graphics and music. Harder. Better sounds. The commentators have an IQ equal to that of Broccoli.

A so-so [Posted on 2002-07-02]
The game is pretty easy. All my wide receivers get over 100 yards each usually, and my QB can throw over 1,500 yds a game. My rb's and fb's get over 215 yds combined! The codes are great, like the one where you can jump so high. Commentary is awesome, Madden knows everyones name, but doesn't know the created ones. Play in various types of games: arcade, exhibition, practice, season, or franchise. I personally like to play arcade style because it's like Blitz2000. Having trouble with the game in plays, well try it out on pracitces. Practice each play on offense, defensive, and special teams. Play a full season and compete online. Replay great games. Now the special effects are helmets popping and new td dances. Trading 2for 1. See your pro or created pro's stats for season and life. The music in the background is fair. Create plays and using codes unlcok, Marshalls, Robots, clowns, and more. The one prob. is that the game speed is too fast. Like once a running back is 5 yards away from all the closest player, it's goes llike this," Rice, at the 20, 25, 30 ,35, no ones gonna stop these guy! the 10 yd line, touchdown! Just like that. A player can go and run the field in 5seconds probably! All in all, the game is a three. It's really fun though. Try it!
