Don't buy Maxtor external drives! [Posted on 2007-11-03]
I just bought a Maxtor 120 gb drive. It comes with, beyond doubt, the most idiotic backup software on the planet. There's no phone number on their web site for support and their live chat is not available on weekends. Here's a summary of the problems with the backup software:
1. Does not allow you to select the entire C drive
2. Does not find all my folders. I have 13 folders off of root (C:\) and it only found seven of them! I tried this on two separate computers. One of the folders was the Program and Files folders!
3. Does not estimate the time to do the backup
4. Does not show progress of the backup (as in "4563 of 23,343 files backed up")
5. Does not provide any warnings for size limitations
6. Does not provide any options to eliminate certain file types, like temp files
7. The help files are just about completely useless

All in all, a top notch backup product.
Can't vouch for the actual physical media, as I just started using it.

Dont Buy Maxtor [Posted on 2008-04-10]
Fails in 6 months and Warranty send me a defective replacement. Called them again to get a second replacement. They have worst customer support who dont understand at all the value of time that they waste me.
If you have enough time and money to waste, go ahead and buy this unreliable product.

Good drive for the price [Posted on 2008-05-05]
Nice design though it would be better if the USB connection wasn't on the side. No power switch. White status light is bright and stays on all the time. Comes with one of those annoying 2 headed USB cables that some computers need to supply enough power. On my MacBook I was able to use a normal USB cable though it had to be a heavier gauge (24awg). Thin USB cables will not work. The performance is acceptable for backup applications. Doesn't get hot.
