Decent enough for the price, but don't expect high performance [Posted on 2008-08-04] After living with this NAS for a few months now, I'm mixed about my feelings toward this. Sure, it's a lot of space, but the performance seems really slow. I know that it's rated for GigE, but the read/write speeds seem about the same as a wired 100mb/s connection. I'm not sure where the limitations for this lie - with the drive or with the Maxtor controller.
The setup is rather easy, and I was rockin' in under 15 minutes. And it's been whisper quiet that I never know it's on.
If you're looking for home storage to be shared effortlessly, this is a great option. If you're looking for performance out of a network drive, then look elsewhere (other than the Western Digital MyBook's - they're about as slow.)
Died after 16 months [Posted on 2008-08-27] Bought this in June 2007 for my small office for use as a backup for 5 PC's. Set-up was easy and it worked OK, until August 2008 when the unit kept on turning off, then would boot up but could not be found on the network, power light would flash, and finally died. Called customer service (required 3 calls), waited 40 minutes to be told that the warrantee is only one year, they don't repair these and that I need to buy a new one. I also have a Netgear NAS that has been working fine, but it is 2x the price. This works fine if you only need one years' worth.
