Great game [Posted on 2000-12-24] This is one of the best games that I own. The graphics are great, the fights are great (and last a long time for more action!), the checks are big, he commentators are good, and the physics are realistic. I love this game, and recommend that you buy it. There are only a few minor glitches, like the commentator sometimes mixes up the scores for the teams, but nothing to significant. Buy it!
Amazing that a '98 game can still hold up to a '00 game! [Posted on 2002-04-17] This has been a great and overall stable PC Hockey game. I can't remember the first time I played it (since this review was writen April 16th 2001!). I felt it was my duty to review it, however, by todays standards, I doubt if you'll be able to find a copy. The graphics are funny, but pardonable by 1998 standards, the checking is outragous, the amount of shots on goals is way too much, but the one denominator that makes this games gameplay superior in my opinion is the strength of the goalie! True, you can belt the goalie from every angle 50 times and not score a goal, unrealistic, but its the only thing that saves this game from falling into the catagory that NHL 2001 fell into. EA Sports decided that the goalie was too hard to beat in NHL 99 so they lowered the skill of the goalies and raised that of the offensive players in titles such as NHL 2001 and 2002. This created a large lopside and now we have another problem (with todays EA Sports hockey games). Too many goals! Yup, I still play my NHL 99 game alot. Its great! True, the shots to goal ratio is 70-40 some games, but thats really the only problem. After buying NHL 2001, I've gone back to playing NHL 99 several times because, in many ways, its more fun to play. Enough said, thank you for reading my review. Iceman
Incredibly fun [Posted on 2005-03-10] The graphics are good, even by today's standards, and the controls are easy to get used to. The goalies aren't TOO hard to beat on the highest difficulty level - once you get the hang of it. The options are great: you can edit the rules of the game, lower the time of each period, enchance the graphics, etc. The biggest error in the game has been mentioned already = the commentator mixes up the teams and says the opposite of what they did. But still, the game is flawless. The gameplay might get repetitive sometimes, but even when you get bored, you'll want to keep playing it over again.
Ahead of it's time but so old you shouldn't bother with it. [Posted on 2005-09-13] This was the HUGEST thing in 1998. But now with the release of NHL 06 99 is 7 years old and obselete. It's a fun game but there are bett ones out there.(by far)
great! [Posted on 2006-07-19] I bought this game in 1999 and still play it. For me it's one of the best addictive sport games ever. I play this one the most just like other classic games like Mario Bros, Lemmings & Donkey kong. NHL '99 is the best version of the whole series because it seems to find a perfect balance between graphics, sound & gameplay. The older versions where not great graphically and the newer ones lack the great gameplay of this version. To me a good game is about great gameplay, exciting sounds & how addictive it is. This game has it all. It's almost like i'm looking at a real hockey game. The checks are great so are the details. You can see the ice scratches, boarding moving etc. Only complains are you get to play the same seasons everytime (the games are the same) and the rookie & pro season might be a bit too easy once you get a hang of it. Also the commentators get a bit annoying after like hearing them for a thousand times! But I still play this game very often.
