good puzzles and great value [Posted on 2007-01-29] My 13 year old daughter really enjoys the Nancy Drew mystery series, and was thrilled to receive this set of five of the older titles for Christmas. She plowed through the entire set in less than four weeks, taking a bit of a break between each one.
The aren't full of razzle dazzle and photorealistic imagery; they are full of puzzles and clues and require the player to think about what they've seen and may need to do. In order for my daughter to solve the mysteries, she learned to take plenty of notes and to review them often while trying to figure out if some new clue or puzzle can be solved with the help of something she's seen before. In other words, she was learning to be a detective.
A few times my daughter got stuck, and I'd help her rethink what she's seen and done. And that process reminded me of how it went for me when I tackled the Myst series.
This particular set is a bargain with five titles. You *might* need to run a couple of them in Windows 98 compatibility mode (under WinXP) but they all ended up running just fine with minimal fuss.
Nancy Drew 75th Anniversary [Posted on 2007-01-30] I love being the detective myself. A lot better than watching it on T.V. A good variety of puzzle to solve and you can do most of it in any order wich makes it so you can play them again and again. If you like mysteries it's a must have. My kids love watching me play and like to play along with me on my lap.
what kind of interface do these games use? [Posted on 2007-02-19] I am interested in buying this set of games but would first like to know how the controls work. Is it simply a point and click? That is, do you simply point the mouse in a certain direction and just click, or can you actually move around the scene with complete freedom of movement? And, if so, is it possible to use mouse invert? I tried a Myst game but it did not offer mouse invert (my style of play). For those who have windows XP problems just Google Windows XP Compatibility Mode. This is Microsoft's web page that tells you how to run older games under XP (this review section wouldn't let me link it here).
Nancy's Back! [Posted on 2007-03-12] If you are a Nancy Drew fan then you are sure to like this set of 3-D PC games. You get to solve the mystery as Nancy, herself! I had a hard time putting my laptop down and getting back to the real world. The 75th Anniversary pack has the first 5 games included and a book, which I didn't know they had created a Nancy series when she was around 8, 9, or 10. Around that age....anyway, one of those are included. It is a very good price for 5 games & a book. You will not be disappointed!!
Anyone Need Help? [Posted on 2007-04-18] I would just like to say that I have completed all of the ND games, and if anybody needs help, just ask right here on your review! Thanks!:)
