Pleased User [Posted on 2008-03-31] Phone was simple to hook-up and works well. I just connected it to a spare port on my home router. It has a better Wi-Fi range than my Palm T/X and older laptop. I live in a concrete building and can use the phone in the whole house. The land line works well. Nice looking product. No problems.
Great Phone [Posted on 2008-03-31] Working good so far. I've had this phone for 3 days now and it works great. Sound quality is perfect for both ends. Setup was as easy as plugging in the device to my network. Battery life for a call is over an hour. The design looks good. Color screen is readable. Controlling the phone is intuitive. The phone is a good size, but a little light. Doesn't seem as sturdy/heavy as I'd expected, but that's not a big deal.
Would be great if it worked [Posted on 2008-04-08] "Unavailable" or busy tone followed by "Sorry call failed!" are the most frequent responses to an attempt to call out using SkypeOut. We routinely miss incoming calls.
Even just going through the menus, "Unavailable" is a frequent response. Maybe one out of four times can you actually get the cordless unit to do what you wish. I'm just 15 feet away from the base unit and they can't communicate.
For this to pass as a telephone, it is going to have to be considerably more reliable. You pick up a phone and use it and it works. This thing just doesn't do that.
It's always an adventure. Sometimes it works--mostly not. Clearly this product is not ready for wide-spread adoption.
We've used Skype as our only phone for over a year and it is an exercise in daily frustration. The only land-line alternative here is a morass of totally unacceptable business practices, or we would have abandoned this product in the first week. For the price, extremely disappointing.
Great Skype phone! Easy installation. [Posted on 2008-04-15] I have used Skype for a couple of years now. I use the Skype service primarily to keep in touch with my family in Europe. For a while, I tried to get by using Skype with my laptop, but more often than not we would run into problems with echoes or other noise on the line. Since I bought the Netgear SPH-200D, I have not had any problems with voice quality. The speakerphone is great and will pick up voices from across the room when other family members want to chime in.
Like other reviewers have pointed out, administration of contacts is greatly simplified if you stick to doing that on a computer. Your contact list is downloaded to the phone when you sign in using your Skype ID and password. If you have used Skype before, installation should not take more than a few minutes.
With this phone, I never hesitate to use Skype for my international calls anymore.
Very Impressed with Netgear SPH 200D [Posted on 2008-05-12] I have one Huge complaint about this phone...everytime I buy one and travel overseas, I end up giving it away to someone because they fall in love with it. 2 in the last month. I am now purchasing 3 more. One for Mom, Dad and hopefully one for me (If I don't end up giving it away as well).
Simple to use and install!
The only trouble I ever have is that it occasionally doesn't connect to the network. The simple way to fix that is unplugging the power cord from the base station for 10 seconds and then pluging it back in and I am back in business.
I have a Skypein number and people call me at a local TX number when I am actually on a different continent. I just gave the last one to my buddy that lives in Shanghai and he purchased a U.S. number so that his customers in the US don't have to pay when calling him in China. I am still amazed that I can talk to people all over the world for 2-3 cents per minute.
