Netgear Skype WiFi Phone [Posted on 2008-01-03] This product is a great. Only a couple of drawbacks such as short battery life (charge usually once per day) and sometimes the network configuration is somewhat difficult. Although it is a little bulkier than a cell phone, I am happy with the purchase. The sound quality is great. After 5 to 10 minutes of talk, it gets a little warm. It would be nice if it came with a charging dock of some type, which would probably push the price up some.
Okay ... it works. But poor quality. [Posted on 2008-01-03] Like other reviewers I found this to be a nice first attempt but it does still have too many things that need upgrading, fixing, or just plain higher quality for the price of this device.
I had high hopes for simply using this to call relatives around the world, but testing it out calling my boyfriend locally proved that the sound quality was horrible. It crackles like a bad reception cell phone and words are often lost or unintellegable. Why buy a phone that no one can hear you properly on?
It is a valiant first attempt but I don't recommend buying this phone. At all!
The only reason this gets 2 stars instead of what I feel is a better deserved 1, is that this phone actually does most of what it promises. It DOES work, it just doesn't work clearly.
And this also isn't for someone who isn't somewhat tech savvy; as this only connects to open networks. Most people have firewalled networks which require you to find your access key which is usually generated randomly by your router company. The idea is nice, but there really aren't a lot of open networks in the States yet.
I'd hold off on buying this type of product until the reviews aren't so low or mixed. Go for a Skype cordless phone that isn't Wifi and you might have much better quality.
Skype Phone [Posted on 2008-01-12] I purchased this phone when my husband was working in Kuwait. It worked fairly well. Sometimes the calls drop and sometimes there is extra noise but I figured with the money I saved every phone call that did work was worth it. The unit does get overly hot to the touch after about 1 hour of usage. I guess for the technology that went into it - it was worth it to have. Probably is overpriced but what can you do if you really need to use one?
Good Door Stop :-( [Posted on 2008-01-16] It wont connect to my D-Link Router (DGL-4300 - Gamer Lounge).
I spent most of the day trying every possible WEP configuration.
Info Page wont display a MAC address.
(Purchased in Australia from Harris Technology)
It goes back in the morning - I'll ask for my money back.
Great phone for my needs [Posted on 2008-04-12] I use this phone in the Bahamas as it is the only way i can get phone service where i am and it works great.
Good quality voice .
The only issues I have with the phone are battery life and having to sign back in if we have a power outage and we have allot here.
Also phone fails to remember my log on information.
I hope they get a better version as the idea is great and until they get a better one mine has more that met my expectations.
