Windows 2000: CAREFUL [Posted on 2001-07-14] Most of the utilities don't work for Windows 2000 AND Symantec does NOT mention that fact until u receive the product. I use the File Compare as a favorite with Windows 98/ME. It's not functional for Windows 2000 as are many of the standard tools.
Great product [Posted on 2001-08-13] My hard drive crashed with bad sectors. So I bought a new hard drive and Norton Utilities because someone at work recommended it. Also Windows 2000 magazine had a great review of SpeedDisk a month ago. The Nortons Utilities CD is bootable. If you were in a bind like me where you can't even install the OS this is a lifesaver. The bad is in the bootable version it doesn't see NTFS. The drive was bad so I formatted it FAT32 with a floppy bootdisk. Booted from the CD and ran DiskDoctor. Worked great. I was finally able to install the OS and my apps. Then I returned the still sealed hard drive and got my money back. SpeedDisk was OK. I was able to defrag my second hard drive that holds my data, but it locked while defragging the primary drive. I'm running Win2000 Service Pack 2 and it even warns you that it hasn't been tested with SP2 yet. Oh well. I'll just wait until the next update. Don't listen to the review that said Windows 2000 comes with all these utilitites and that you have to reboot to run disk doctor. Windows NT or 2000 will never scan a drive while your machine is running. You may not have any apps running, but there are a bunch of services running. I'm IT, I know. I run a few Exchange servers and deal with NT services every day. And Windows 2000 defrag doesn't defrag the paging file, Norton's does.
The Unwritten Details.... [Posted on 2001-08-13] I have had Norton Utilities for some time and found it to be useful and efficient in almost all of its utilities. The download and running of the programs has generally been flawless and beneficial without a hitch--no system errors or crashes or incompatibilities. I must say that I don't use the defrag utility as I already have another product I use for that (VoptME-excellent!) I bought a new system which uses DDR RAM and have 512MB (2 modules) memory installed. When running Norton's system diagnostic (memory only)I repeatedly got memory address errors time after time. I reversed the modules and cleaned them and the slots according to Norton's directions and still memory errors--failed the test! Couldn't figure it out--this was new memory! I bought 2 new sticks of memory and the same thing happened. Strange after running 4 different reputable diagnostics and the memory passed each time (SmithMicro's CheckIt,DocMem,Mem_86, and BurnIT) I still got errors. I then tried one module at a time in each slot(256MB) and voila! passed with flying colors! Tried the second module in each slot and passed--no problem. Put both modules in as originally seated and memory errors again. Aha!! I've got it. Went to Symantic's website FAQ's and found out that Utilities Suite won't diagnose more than 256MB memory at a time. This was after spending much time and money trying to find the solution to this problem. I really think this sort of thing should be mentioned on the box or manual (I can't find it). After all, there might be many who have more than 256MB RAM and had the same thing happen (according to Norton's FAQ's there are!) Really disappointed and surprised at this and my opinion of Norton has dropped more than one notch.
For anyone with computer errors ! [Posted on 2001-09-22] This program cured all of my computer problems. I was getting errors all of the time, so I decided to try this product. It fixed 48 problems. I have not had one problem since installing it. I was so impressed that I also downloaded Internet security 2002. You can try a free 30 trial of this software if you go to Symantec.com. Today I ordered the CD Rom of both Internet Security 2002 and Utilities 2002. (TRY IT) You have nothing to lose and much to gain......
Worked Well for Me ! [Posted on 2002-03-06] My exprience with Norton Utilities on my PC running Windows Me was for the most part positive . The frist time I ran system check , it found over a dozen errors , that it then fixed ! I would have given it that one more star except for the couple of bugs I had to correct after being made aware of them by Symantec's support. Check for 0 byte OEM fileds crated by this application , there could be thousands of them. On my system there was and it took about a 1/2 hour to delete all of them . Also when using the Disk Health sensor in Norton Doctor , it prevents Windows from creating new restore points . Simply removing this sensor from Norton Doctor , resolves this problem. The Norton Protected Recycle Bin saved my [rear] a couple of times when I deleted something I should not have and already emptied my recycle bin.
