Resource hog. Unimpressed. Uninstalled. [Posted on 2008-02-11] I am using WinXP SP2, all updates, on a fast, modern laptop. I'm a very experienced PC user.
I installed PC Tools Internet Security on 2/11/08. After trying it once I uninstalled it. Here's why:
PC Tools Internet Security is a resource pig. It takes 250+MB of RAM, over 70% of CPU.
I tried the trial version of the program. Although the program would do a scan and show "security threats" the trial version wouldn't remove them without buying the full version. It is not much of a trial if I cannot determine how PC Tools Internet Security deals with not just sensing a threat but actually eliminating it.
It doesn't play well with Firefox. The first time I tried to open FF after installing Internet Security, my computer went to 100% of CPU. I tried to close Firefox and for 10 minutes the computer was useless while the two programs battled it out. Finally I got control of the computer again, and closed PC Tools Internet Security.
By the way, just closing PC Tools Internet Security takes over 30 seconds.
Since I could not evaluate how well PC Tools eliminates spyware, and since the program takes so much PC resources it is all but unusable, I will buy something else. Don't these guys do usability testing?
