Spyware doctor is not creating the slowdown problem [Posted on 2008-07-29] This is my story and i'm sticking to it.
Got a really bad virus/trojan/spyware called the (xp antivirus 2008), google it. I had Mcafee running and up to date the whole time. It went right past it. Totally took over the browser. I have had these in the past, again that got past Mcafee and it was pretty easy to download a free spyware program like spybot etc and remove it. Not so with the one above. It got to the point where I could not get on the web to download any other programs to try to find and remove, please note, I tried 6 programs and none of them even found the culprit. Spybot, spyware sweeper, spyware terminator etc etc.
I went to Best Buy and bought the Spyware Doctor based on the PC mags recommendation, on sale for $15 installed it and ran the scan. It found the problem in the short scan, after removing the bad items it found the computer immediately sped up and I knew it solved the issue, I then ran the full scan and it found it in a few more places. Spyware Doctor saved the day ! and a $200 bill for repairs.
I have the same slow down experiences described in the other reviews and have not yet resolved them. However, from what I have found the problem is Mcafee not Spyware Doctor. Mcafee and others like them have compatiblity problems that don't like other competeting spyware programs. Mcafee now wants to run a bleeping virus scan everytime I start the computer. Funny how it's doing that now but not when I was being attacked by XP Antivirus 2008. I am going to remove Mcafee and install a less intrusive virus scan. Please note from what I have read that this is a common problem with Norton, Mcafee and others. They don't want the competition and you can easily find a list of other spyware programs that they don't have compatibility with.
Ultimately you will need a program like Spyware doctor because the Mcafee's of the world don't always find the bad guys. Likewise you need them to do certain things the spyware programs don't. This layered effect to fight viruses, trojans, spyware etc is the way to go but they need to be compatible. So we have 15 reviews that want to blame Spyware Doctor but the real culprit is the compatibility with the main anti-virus program being used. Something that they themselves are creating because they don't want the competition. Good luck with XP Antivirus 2008 without Spyware Doctor.
A Total System Hog! [Posted on 2008-08-18] Spyware Doctor is Junk! It uses 100% of system resources when running and slows computers to a crawl. PC Tools uses negative renewal billing. Run, don't walk, away from this product!
STAY AWAY FROM THIS NIGHTMARE!!! [Posted on 2008-08-20] I will add to the barrage of horrible reviews. I installed Spyware Doctor also because of high praise by prominent PC magazines and Internet reviews, seemed to work well at first, catching several spyware items, but little did I know, it was sloooowly destroying my PC.
After not too long, programs wouldn't load, Windows wouldn't shut down, I couldn't figure out what the problem was, then I decided to do some trial and error, I uninstalled programs that I thought might be the culprit, nothing helped, until I uninstalled Spyware Doctor, finally my PC was running normal again :) Until I fixed my problem, I was ready to buy a new PC, I was so frustrated.
Bottom line, DO NOT install this, YOU'LL BE VERY SORRY!
Good once, bad five times [Posted on 2008-08-20] Spyware Doctor has had glowing reviews, so I tried it. On my computer it runs flawlessly. No slowdown at all. On my suggestion, five other people bought it and all--that is every one of them--had their computers slow down so much that they almost seemed locked.
Click an icon and a minute or so later, it responds. I could hardly believe it. I checked all five, and all had the same problem. Enable "Intelligard" and you are walking in frozen molasses. Turn off Intelligard, and you're running again. I searched their forum and found numerous complaints but no solutions.
It looks to me like there are five to one odds that this program will hurt more than it helps. I have to say thumbs down!
Rip off city. [Posted on 2008-08-29] I have never bought any product from PC tools BUT a 360 dollar charge showed up on my debit card with no warning at all. Now I have to spend a week getting a new card and take a hit to my credit as it caused my account to overdraft. I hate these people and will never buy a product from them.
