Customer Reviews:

The first step at really getting mobile [Posted on 2000-09-24]
Ever since I got my first Palm III I wanted to be able to access the internet with it. Recently, when I upgraded to a Palm IIIxe and could store a lot more applications, I decided to delve deeper into the Palm-Internet area. At first I looked at wireless, which is far to expensive. Then I tried using a standard external modem with my Palm, it worked great but wasn't very portable. Then Palm released the new Palm modem. It's faster than the old ones, at 33.6, it's small, light wait and runs on both batteries and a AC adapter. Now you can realy go mobile with your Palm. Whenever you are near a phone jack you can plug in and go online. The only major downfall is that it's not a 56K modem, although with most ISP's and phone lines you don't really notice a difference since most of the time you are dealing with text. Overall this is a great add on for any Palm owner, and the software which comes with it is great, especially if you want to download mail from either AOL or any POP3 server. Now you can take the internet with you, where ever you go.

Old software a bit of a drag [Posted on 2000-10-25]
I just got this product this weekend, and it does work great with my IIIxe - plenty of speed, even with AvantGo. But, I have a beef - the CD I received contains MultiMail Pro 2.26, which works fine BUT the current version of MultiMail Pro is 3.1 with many more features. Palm says I have to pay for a full version if I want MultiMail Pro 3.1, at $40! Since I just paid my $100, I felt a little miffed at this shortcoming, especially since Palm now owns Actual Software. Customer support was a bit clueless about this, and seemed surprised I would even ask...

AOL users should think twice [Posted on 2001-02-23]
I bought this to go with my Palm IIIc, after reading about free software like AvantGo that lets you surf the Internet and download newspapers, etc. from any phone line, after connecting with your ISP. However, I couldn't get AvantGo to work with my ISP, which is AOL. I e-mailed AvantGo, and they replied that AvantGo does not work with AOL (which conflicts with what is on their website). Palm support confirmed this, e-mailing me, "Please note that you cannot use any internet surfing application on your Palm handheld with AOL." Then I twice e-mailed Palm to ask which ISP would work instead, and they sent completely useless, stupid replies that had nothing at all to do with my question. Finally I called and spoke to someone who said that any other ISP should work, it's only AOL that doesn't. So now I have to select and register (and pay for, if I don't find a good free one) a second ISP to make full use of my Palm modem. On the other hand, the AOL e-mail software that came with the modem works great. I can type e-mails on the train on the way home, and send them quickly over my phone line when I get home. But if I can't get the Internet surfing working soon, I'll be returning this, as I didn't buy it only for e-mail.

This Is A Good Accessory If You Use Eudora [Posted on 2001-04-23]
This little modem runs on two AAA batteries! It's actually somewhat awesome to hear it chirp when making a connection. The software, MultiMail is OK but does not support file attachments to email. A better free Internet software suite is Eudora for the Palm. Eudora also supports Web browsing. You can hotsync your Eudora email for the Palm with the Eudora email for the PC.

The modem is only 3300 baud but that is adequate for email and occasional Web browsing. Over all, a pretty good value.
