Fair Listening [Posted on 2008-04-09] Not a bad product for the money. I really didn't like them
all that well. I have old ears which need all the help they can get so a Grandchild has them and is happy. I then ordered M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Speakers.
They are being shipped. I hope they live up to their billing but it is not like I'm going to run short of Grandchildren.
What I didn't like was the audio was 'muddy'. Not clear as I'd like. The Bass speaker was more loud than good. With audio equipment better costs. However if you don't listen to movies nor to music, with them, then they will be OK.
Good speakers for a great price [Posted on 2008-05-09] My ears are going bad, but as far as I can tell these are great compared with the flat speakers before.
You can't beat the sound quality for the price [Posted on 2008-07-04] Plain and simple - this product is a winner. Amazon's price is better than Wal-Mart, so grab one while you can.
Not terrible, but not so good either [Posted on 2008-08-27] I got this from Amazon just 2 weeks ago.
I bought it based on the reviews on Amazon.
But I am kind of disappointed.
I am replacing another set of PC speakers (2+1) with this Philips.
But the sound quality isn't half of what I expected.
The treble is terrible. It doesn't have crisp high end sounds. The mid range sounds are not rich at all. They just sound flat. The base unit has to be toned down to not overtake the high and mid range sounds.
I am using a set of AR speakers also (2+1) in other room and even though that set has served me over 10 years, it still sounds 100 times better than this one.
I had to use other software sound enhancers for iTunes to make music sound better (just better).
I have to say, if you are really searching for good sound with a budget. I'd pass this one.
Sure, it is better than some of the really low end Logitech speakers but not much better.
I would recommend this if it was under $22.
The extra volume control really doesn't serve much purpose other than volume control. But now a days, almost all keyboards have quick buttons for adjusting volume (as in my case of using Mac.)
It therefore causes the table to have too many cables and wires.
In a day when everyone is trying to go wireless, this really sets you back 20 years in technology.
I guess the reason for the mediocre sound for the mid and high is because the 2 small speakers weight like a fly. They are so light. The magnets in the speakers must weight not much more than the note magnet on your refrigerator.
Not recommended for game playing. The low is too strong and high is too flat.
Don't settle for less in this case! [Posted on 2008-09-27] My first impression of these speakers was they might be mediocre for the price even if they are a little ugly in their cosmetics. I found the blue power light on the sub distracting and too large and bright for its purpose. The sub speaker it's self is a cheap flimsy item that is screwed into the bottom of the box and is unguarded by a grill of some kind. But cosmetics aside I found the fact that the volume is controlled by varying the input astonishing! The volume remote also lacked a headphone jack on it which is a large inconvenience and somewhat uncommon for computer/multimedia speaker systems. Once powered up and going they sound good on the surface but only compared to your grandmother's clock radio. While the satellite speakers hit high tones loudly they were extremely bright and distorted. The sub does its job in terms of "thumping" rap music but was unable to carry sustained low tones from bass vocals and guitars. You can hear an obvious cut-off between the satellites and the sub which does not help the sub sound omnidirectional. As for the mid ranged tones they reflected the poor construction of the boxes and sounded toneless and cold. I found a couple of people in my dorm with this speaker set to compare mine with and my set was not a fluke; they all sounded the same even from different sources. Because of these reasons I cannot recommend these speakers to anyone with a tuned ear, even for the price.
