a must have for programmer [Posted on 2007-06-29] Used this book for 3 years by now. A must have for C++ programmers. You can not go wrong with Wrox professional series.
A must have for all C++ programmers. [Posted on 2007-08-06] This book will take not only the novice and intermediate C++ programmers to the next level, but experienced C++ programmers as well! It's very easy to read and understand. It covers many details that aren't in other books. Whether you're a beginner who wants to take the next step forward towards professional C++ programming that you can use in real world, commercial-grade software, or someone who has been programming with C++ for years, you really should pick yourself up a copy of this book!
a great volume, but not content [Posted on 2007-11-27] This is really a book of great volume. But in no way that justifies its excellence.
One beginner's book + Mr. Sutter or Meyer's book makes great choice instead, which is succinct, perspicacious, advanced and just-to-the-point.
(I just changed my mind back to write this review - the reviews given above are just too misleading that I just could not help but write.)
The One-Star Reviews Are Just Silly [Posted on 2008-01-28] Unfortunately, the field of computer science and software engineering is full of pompous & pretentious people who think they are god's gift to programming. Which is why I get a sort of schadenfreude glee as the jobs get scarcer and the salaries drop! ;-)
Anyway, I was very happy with the material presented in this book and I am an overpaid consultant of many years experience (15 years with C++)! :-)
I was surprised by how much was covered in this book, and although I "thought I new everything" picked up plenty of tips & advice & had numerous "gee, I didn't know that" moments. This book was one of the better "investments" I've come across. It presents pretty much every facet available in C++ in a very readable manner (not a dry reference tome).
The "one-star" reviews are just very unfair; at the very least if you're pretentious enough and think you know it all, you could give this book a 3-star minimum.
For dummies, but they don't say so up front [Posted on 2008-03-16] This book is far too long for the information it contains. The authors went with a light, conversational tone, which is just plain annoying most of the time. When I buy a book like this, especially one that says its for experienced programmers, I want it to be straightforward, concise, and comprehensive. This is none of those things. I was able to get what I needed out of it, so it wasn't totally useless, but it could have been a lot more useful than it was.
This just goes further to prove to me that if I can find an O'Reilly book on a subject, that's the one I should buy. I've never been disappointed in anything from that publisher.
