Great features but lousy performance [Posted on 2008-03-17] I tried two of these phones from a local store (with a good return policy, thankfully). The feature set is great. I love the dedicated voicemail buttons for both lines 1 and 2, it handles area codes intelligently (we have 10 digit dialing with multiple overlaid local area codes), and the blue backlight is nice. BUT... it's just a lousy phone. With both units I tried, the phone added a loud hissing during all calls. It was definitely the phone and not my line, because when I plugged the exact same phone wire into any other phone, there was no hissing. This alone was a deal-breaker, but there were other issues as well. I experienced the same problem of cell phone interference noted by other users. My cell didn't erase the phone's entire directory, but it did erase the date and time, which is annoying. On the first unit, the display was fine, but on the second unit, the text was so washed out that whenever the backlight came on (which is when you press any button or do anything, and the backlight can NOT be turned off), the text was unreadable. I think it would be a big mistake to buy this phone.
Not a great phone. It's going back. [Posted on 2008-03-26] This is a well designed, attractive phone with nice features like separate headset and speaker buttons. Unfortunately, as other reviewers have noted, sound quality is only fair to poor. Frankly, I'm surprised that RCA would put its name on such a low quality instrument. I'd gladly pay more for a high quality home office speakerphone, but I haven't yet found one. I do not recommend this phone.
DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! [Posted on 2008-04-04] This phone looks good but does not work at all. I have returned 2 of these phones, and the 3rd one they sent to me doesn't work either! The handset buzzes when you talk into it, the time and date randomly stop working, now I can't dial out. I give up! I am looking for a new phone. After returning 2 of them I have no more time to invest returning the 3rd one and will throw this piece of junk in the garbage! I have avoided RCA products because of past trouble with their TV's, and this phone confirms me NEVER purchasing another RCA product again! DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!
DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! [Posted on 2008-04-04] Looks good, that's about it. I have had 3 of these phones and they don't work! Terrible sound quality and now with my 3rd one I can't even dial out. I give up! I have returned 2 of them and this 3rd one is in the garbage, I'm done wasting more time on returning them. I am warning you, DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! 25204RE1-A
The Good, the Bad & the Not-Ugly [Posted on 2008-04-08] First, this phone is very attractive, offering sleek, clean and modern design with enough of a nod to "old" design features that make it more intuitively operable for traditionalists. It also boasts pretty darned good sound quality, whether one uses the hand set, speaker, or a head set (I use a wired Plantronics). Now for the Bad. In no particular order, here's a list of rants, gripes and shortcomings, many of which are stunning by their omission, given the "newness" of this item: (a) any numbers and names you store in memory do NOT sync with incoming calls so that if the caller is "blocked", or does not have caller ID service, all you'll see on the display is "Unknown Caller" or some other designation; (b) the keypad numbers have NO dedicated key for typographical symbols (e.g., "&", "-", "@", commas, etc.), which makes inputing business names or abbreviations impossible with the limited space provided for entering and storing IDs; (c) the 2-line version is NOT expandable (i.e., RCA does not make a cordless phone that one can add to this one); and (d) your phone service provider must OFFER call message indicator service (as opposed to a "stutter tone") for the Voice Mail lighted buttons to flash if you have received a message (this is at odds with the Owner Manual that provides clear instructions on how to set up the Voice Mail indicator feature without mentioning that its functionality is dependent on the provider's services). So, to paraphrase the old joke: "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, it's a fine play."
