What a steal. [Posted on 2008-05-17] For the price I paid for this it was impossible to pass up. This is heavy. Very heavy. it looks small in the picture but trust me it isn't. Built to last and will never wear out.
More than just a pepper roaster [Posted on 2008-05-22] I got lucky and ordered the Pepper Roaster in red (Salsa)for only $7.99 (elegible for super saver shipping with additional purchases totalling $25). In addition to warming totillas and toasting baguets of bread, I use it for keeping covered dishes warm, over a low heat setting,(like premade mashed potatoes, etc). I found that it works well as a heat diffuster under Green Pans which helps to prolong their nonstick life. I am going to try making flat bread on it as I discovered a wonderful Naan recipe online that requires a grill. Even though it is messy (drips pepper juices on the electric cook top burners), it creates the most delicious roasted bell peppers that give recipes a fabulous flavor. I set it up on my counter to set hot pots and pans coming out of the oven or off the burners. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because no photo came with the instructions. I had to go online to see how to assemble, as I couldn't figure out what to do with the flat griddle (it is just an additional piece to substitute for the grill part, you don't actully use it along with the open grill grate); however, it does come with a booklet of fabulous recipes by Chef Rick Bayless. I love my Pepper Roaster!
Rick Bayless Pepper Roaster [Posted on 2008-06-05] I tried the pepper roaster on my smooth top electric range and it worked perfectly. The product is supposed to work better on gas ranges. If I have a disapointment, it is the grill attachment which is pretty small and made of cast iron, which means it is heavy. We all know that cast iron has to be oiled or greased to use it and after the very first use, it became discolored, but not evenly. This is just typical of cast iron. I would have preferred a non stick coated type product. This would be great to use at a campsite on on the barbeque.
Very nice [Posted on 2008-06-15] This thing is really nice. It's heavy and well made. How do YOU roast peppers? And it's a griddle, to. For the times I roast peppers and the sale price, it's the greatest.
Rick Bayless Pepper Roaster Spices up Your Cuisine! [Posted on 2008-07-16] Absolutely ingenious product! Roast your peppers whole on the grill top for your fajitas and enjoy the subtly smoky sweetness that you just cannot achieve by pan sauteeing! The cast iron solid top holds heat with a fierceness and can be used to brown your beef, chicken, onions, whatever. Extremely well made and more versatile than you can imagine. My only complaint? I've found it's not quite big enough for me and my family's appetite --- should have bought two!
