A good game, but terrible replay value [Posted on 2003-06-13] I enjoy playing the Myst games once through, they are fun and challenging. However my computer would not allow me to hit a certain switch for some reason, and I was therefore never able to get to the location on the cover. Even if I had, I would never play the game again, I would know how to do everything, and therefore, what would be the point? At least it is better then Myst in which you can win within about 15 minutes of starting the game, but still... Any 60 dollar game (as it was when it was released) should last longer than this. With the detail put in, the game itself is rather short, with puzzle solving accounting for much of your time. Also some puzzles can be so frustrating when you know what to do, but can't (the stopping the scopes thing, the puzzle at the top of the dome on the first island). I thought it was a beautiful game, but I wouldn't get it unless it is below 20 dollars, otherwise I don't really think it's worth it.
One of the best games I've ever played! [Posted on 2003-07-21] Riven is a wonderful computer game- the sequel to the phenomenal Myst and the prequel to the extremely wonderful Myst: Exile. It takes a while to finish it, but it's worth it. I would recommend buying a walkthrough book or if you really wanted to figure it out on you own, get a writing pad and draw EVERYTHING that you see. It'll come in handy. Again, it's one of the best games I've ever played!
very fun, VERY DIFFICULT [Posted on 2003-07-30] I enjoyed Riven very much. It wasn't a game that you got through in a single afternoon, and it keeps you challenged, but with adequate rewards for defeating puzzles. It is nice that you can wander and choose your puzzles at the beginning. Be warned, however, the game gets VERY DIFFICULT when you get to the fire marbles, and at this point, figuring out the location and the color of the marbles, the game requires Albert Einstein IQ, but you can handle it....right? The only dissapointment that I experienced was that of capturing Ghen. When I opened the book, I had expected something to the effect of: NO! How could you do this to me! Instead, you merely see dunny swirling around. No big deal, but slightly dissapointing. If you are looking for a clean, challenging game that will keep you busy for a long, long time, look no further. Riven is the game for you.
A gem [Posted on 2004-07-14] The original CD-ROM Riven I gave a 4/5, and also a 4/5 for the Playstation version mainly due to the disc swapping. But the DVD-ROM version is a relief. Now you can enjoy this great adventure without switching discs every few minutes which makes it feel more realistic in my opinion. This is a great game. I recommend it to any video-gamer who is up for a new, unique, challenge.
None better [Posted on 2008-01-21] Riven, like Myst is still awesome, many years after release. . . Nobody does it better than Cyan. If you haven't tried these games, and you think you would enjoy a non-violent adventure, You MUST play them all. You will not regret it
