I've had this for over two years now, and it's just now starting to fail me. The reason for that though is most likely my own. Both my usb and the companion accidentally went through a wash. I left both pieces alone to dry and they worked fine afterwards. That was back in August and it is now late November. I don't know of too many devices that will stand being washed and then work fine.
I loved the folder option the mp3 player allowed. Other players I used to have just loaded the songs and it took forever for me to find the one I wanted. Folders make it easier though searching through the playlist feature can be a pain if you have a lot of folders with mp3's stored on the drive.
I am considering buying another companion instead of an entirely new mp3 player. For what I used it for, it never really failed me. The disk failures were annoying, but I always popped the battery cover and then it worked by restarting. I don't have too much to spend, so it could be worth it.
Cruzer Micro 4 GB model doesn't fit! [Posted on 2007-07-23]
I never saw anywhere in the description of the product or on the label that the 4 GB, slightly larger model of the Cruzer Micro wouldn't fit in the Mp3 Companion. So I was pretty disappointed when it arrived in the mail and I couldn't even try it. I assumed that in all the pictures of the product that they were showing the 512 MB model of the flash drive just because they felt like it, not because it was the only one that fit! The product description needs to be more clear about which Cruzer Micro models will fit as obviously not all of them do.

If you're looking for an amazing MP3 player that you're willing to spend top dollar on to get top quality sound and no troubles, then this player is not for you.
However, if you're looking for a quick way to get started with a cheap player that's easy to upgrade the size of the memory on, then this is the way to go.
The sound quality isn't amazing. It's bulky despite it's small size. If you buy good electronics batteries with long life, you'll have a long lasting battery you can pop in and out at your leisure. You don't need a computer or AC adapter to charge it up. If you want recharge abilities, buy a battery recharging kit (you can usually get the Energizer or Panasonic ones pretty cheap, tons of battery manufacturers have rechargeables and rechargers now), and carry a fully charged spare if you're going to be traveling a lot where you might not be able to plug in. It only takes one battery, so a four pack will last you a while.
The screen is small and difficult to read for those with poor eyesight. It's not lit very well.
However, swapping music and memory size is the simplest ever. Get your hands on a SanDisk Cruzer (micro) in just about any capacity and load it up with music files. USB drives are so cheap now, I had one I dedicated to just music so there were no fancy directories and other things I needed to navigate through to find my music, and I didn't have to worry about other files loaded on it. Once you've done that, take it out of your computer and plug it into the adapter. Voila. Music. If you use Windows, drag and drop or copy and paste it through Explorer just like you would with any other USB drive. Simple. Easy. No extra software to install and convert music.
I do recommend getting yourself your own headphones, as the ones that came with it became extremely uncomfortable for me. I was never much of an earbud fan to begin with, and the ones that come with it are stiff and somewhat painful.

Nice expandable plyer, just buy extra USB Cruzer Micros and you have unlimited storage. This solid-state player is great in all weather and can take lots of abuse. I get about 6hrs on 1 AAA NiMh battery. I am a letter carrier and this thing works in all extremes, 0 degrees to 95 degrees, no problems.

I must say that in it's time, this product was really very innovative. Imagine playing music off a USB drive! I have used it with the matching Cruzer Micro USB drive for hours of music and entertainment. Although the audio output is nowhere close to audiophile quality, it does a reasonably nice job and a nice toy to have.
