I would give it a ZERO!!! [Posted on 2007-12-28] Horrible, horrible, horrible!
Nuance? More like Nuisance! Basically, you get the privilege of paying almost $200 and get no customer support at all, unless you like paying $$$ to send an email. Yeah, not even a real live person!
I have a consulting business for small business networks. I have had to install this program over 50 times in 6 months. Never, under any circumstances, did this install correctly, work well or not cause headaches. Worst of all, my clients blame me for a product I have known to be GARBAGE since version 8. I have tried under Windows 2000, Windows XP and Vista. BAD! BAD! BAD!
It does not even offer automatic updates. You have to painstakingly comb the website, log in with an account, download it yourself and install it. And that is if you are lucky enough to get an update to resolve the problem! A year later and some of my clients are still SUFFERING crashes and random lock ups!!!!
Sadly, Nuance does not have to get off of it's lazy bottom and make a better product because there is NO COMPETITION! I would say that if you are serious about scanning for PHOTO work, check out Vue Scan. If you are serious about business scanning, you would be better off getting a small biz solution from Fuji, Canon, Xerox or Kyocera. Their small biz models have custom and FULLY SUPPORTED scanning software that blows Paperport away!
Do your research, make sure the product is compatible with your situation and hardware and finally, make sure the software is NOT Paperport!
I am stupid [Posted on 2008-01-10] My only conclusion, after reading numerous reviews, mostly negative, and purchasing this software (as an upgrade) anyway, is that I must be totally stupid. I suppose I was overly optimistic - version 8 worked pretty well, this had to be an improvement, right? Wrong. This is a totally unreliable piece of software. Despite installations on three different machines with different scanner configurations, the software crashes, freezes up, and/or suddenly rejects the scanner at some arbitrary point during scanning. There should be a law against marketing this kind of stuff and making the kind of promises Nuance does. Criminal!
They ruined an otherwise good program. [Posted on 2008-01-16] We used PaperPort in our network since version 8.0, and we currently use PaperPort version 10.0 (Professional). Although speed has always been an issue, I would have previously recommended PaperPort as long as you had a computer with good processing speed (Note: we have a peer-to-peer Wundows XP Professional network)
After installing version 11.0 (Professional) I would STRONGLY suggest that you look elsewhere if you plan to use this product in a networked workgroup (peer-to-peer). Although they did improve the speed of the program in some areas, it now takes two minutes to save a scanned PDF file to a network folder! In PaperPort 10, it happened almost instantly.
I called PaperPort technical support and got some patch files, but they were of no help. When I called back the second time, technical support was out of ideas and my only alternative now is to return the product.
Once again, avoid this product if you plan to save pdf files in network folders. I have no idea what they did, but it's a shame how they ruined this product.
Stay far far away [Posted on 2008-02-12] I have been a Paperport user for many years. Version 11 is full of bugs, frequently hangs running under Vista, and there is noooooooo help from Tech Support unless you are willing to part with $9.95 per call. Emails to Tech Support are answered with stock replies, if at all. Save yourself a lot of frustration, don't buy or upgrade to Version 11 if you running Vista.
Didn't work, didn't start, nada [Posted on 2008-04-03] I installed the "free 15 day trial" version of PP Pro 11 from a website download. The install was slow but successful.
Something did start - an indexing program appeared on my system tray. My first ditch to drive into was to tell it to index the PDF files on My Documents. It indexed every single file there.
Next, I clicked on the friendly "paperport" shortcut on my desktop. Nothing happened. I rebooted. Clicked on the not-so-friendly-now shortcut, again. Nothing happened, again.
Found out I would have to pay $9.95 to report this problem via email.
My next stop was the uninstaller and a visit to Nuance's website to cancel the "free trial" which would have cost me $199.99 in 15 days.
Whew! Close one, Eddie. Such bogus stuff. How did they get to version 11.0? Do they multiple their internal alpha releases by 10 and start from there?
